I think the best way Joe could be relaunched is with a live action tv show. That way you don't need the budget of a major motion picture and you don't need a 2-hour plot. Think of what marvel has done with agents of shield - a small team and more characters added throughout the series. Obviously there are more points to be made, but I'll stop here.

The Last Ship and Strike Back comes to mind of a kind of GI Joe Tv Show but those are more adult oriented so it would have to be created more like Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future...

It has to appeal to kids like it did for us in the Joe commercials of the 90s...

"Determine" to release some actual product and licensing deals to show you might actually care to "revive" the GIJoe franchise. So many 80s childhood brands are available in some form but GIJoe is a glaring omission. Toys, shirts, collectibles, party goods, games, school supplies, etc. There is nothing for GIJoe.

The cartoon is what got me started on gi joe. In fact, a brand's cartoon is what always got me started on something. Bu5 do kids watch cartoons these days? They're always on their phone or tablet, so would a cartoon even be the correct path to take?

Hasbro has mentioned PDK films in more than one instance but not by name.
They want fan generated content to help drive their brands. and why not it is free advertising for them. This is why they support groups like the Finest and others who make more of GIJOE than it just being a toy or collectible. 3 million plus views on a video that just debuted on a channel with 3 million subscribers for one of their franchise brands. Get GIJOE in that wheelhouse and it will move out of the challenger brand category. The question is how do we as fans get it there?

People forget that all those little "GI Joe" branded items? The random kids cups at Walmart, the shirts, the wacky "tiny 12" GI Joe" novelty figure at Cracker Barrel, the Prime1 statues, the club? The dozen or so titles IDW publishes (many of which now include GI Joe)? Hasbro gets a piece of that, either through set fees or royalties. And let's not forget that those SDCC exclusives were NOT being given away. All said and done, I feel safe in arguing that the GI Joe "brand", as a licensed entity, brings in a couple million dollars per year through all those venues. No, it's not going to have a drastic impact on the balance sheet, but the fact the brand has enough interest to see that sort of licensing effort speaks VOLUMES to the value of the brand itself. It's worth remember that the "persistence" of brands like Transformers, GI Joe, and My Little Pony has a LOT to do with how much Hasbro has invested in trying to keep those brand relevant and active. On average, it seems to take a LOT of brands about a DECADE to successfully revamp themselves and relaunch. Fans of Hasbro's core brands are generally more spoiled by the company's efforts to keep the brands active, meaning we get a LOT more stuff than we would have from ANY other company. For comparison, Hasbro's had Micronauts on the "back burner" since 2009. And if we're lucky, Micronauts might finally roll out next year with a cartoon series and toy line. I really don't think Hasbro's asking much from GI Joe fans to wait a couple years to ensure the next major push has all the pieces it needs to be successful.

The REAL question is how do we or Hasbro do THAT? And again, it's worth noting that the "ignition point" for Transformers current success can be DIRECTLY tied back to the first feature film, something many fans despised and even declared it would destroy the franchise as a whole. And then you have My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, which faced many of the SAME hardships as GI Joe Renegades (inaccurate product line, limited availability due to channel), managed to build itself into a brand perhaps even stronger than Transformers, and did so by expanding its market into areas NOBODY ever expected (the "Brony" phenomenon). The question, again, ultimately becomes "How or what does Hasbro need to do with GI Joe to create THAT kind of response to the brand?" Quote:

Why? And you've seen the kind of product Chap Mei puts out, do you REALLY think they'll respect the brand to "up their game" to any meaningful degree?

No, it's not going to have a drastic impact on the balance sheet, but the fact the brand has enough interest to see that sort of licensing effort speaks VOLUMES to the value of the brand itself. Neither for Masters of the Universe, or Thundercats, or Jem, or Micronauts or many more of the DOZENS of "80s childhood brands" that were produced. And in the case of many, they are relegated to Kickstarters and online venues where only the hardcore will know or care about them. Doesn't matter how good Super7's Masters of the Universe product is...most average kids and parents won't see them at Walmart or Target and therefore won't even care if they existed. It's worth remember that the "persistence" of brands like Transformers, GI Joe, and My Little Pony has a LOT to do with how much Hasbro has invested in trying to keep those brand relevant and active. I really don't think Hasbro's asking much from GI Joe fans to wait a couple years to ensure the next major push has all the pieces it needs to be successful. To bring in $1 million in licensing revenue at a standard 12% royalty rate, that means the brand is doing over $8 million in wholesale sales. Let's just say the average wholesale price of that licensed merchandise is $4 dollars, that would mean licensees are selling 2 million combined t-shirts, comics, statues and knick knacks. Not even close. They are lucky if they are selling a couple of hundred thousand. |
