Has Hasbro even confirmed their appearance at Joe Con? Didn't they skip the con one time and there were no Joes to show for it that year?

It was announced that Derry DePriest will moderate the Kindle Worlds Author Panel. There is a thread on it somewhere.

But Derryl DePriest will attend this year con according to some previous posts. I don't know whether he will be there himself or present as VP of Hasbro. |

I feel like Derryl wouldn't bother to show his face if he doesn't have a 2nd Kindle contest or 2017 line-up to hawk. I mean, that would be a lot of weepy men to endure for the weekend...

I don't find this surprising at all. There was barely any Joe product in the last few years. Plus, Hasbro is rebooting the brand to fit in with their shared universe plans. A new GI Joe retail line could be years away, so they really don't need a dedicated brand manager if nothing is being made.

I met him at JoeCon and he was a nice guy. I think the line for the last two years has been hit and miss, and for such a small line, there should be no room for error. The color choices for most of the repaint figures have been terrible. In some cases, classic colors would've been better and in other cases, homages to one of the traditional teams would've been better. The Scarlett and Zartan in the SDCC set were also a waste of plastic. To me it's a toss-up whether someone else can put together a better line-up, but there's real room for improvement.
I'd say his best moment was resurrecting the lost Blowtorch and Croc repaints. That was the one case of giving us repaints that actually meant something to fans. The Gung-Ho and Shadow Guard were the best releases under his run, but he admitted he made the decision to shortpack them. Last edited by JediJones; 05-11-2017 at 07:04 PM.. |

This is such a shame, because Mark was actually a fan of this line; it wasn't just a job for him. I wish him the best wherever he goes.
As far as what this means for the line, I would say it does not look good. I think we will get a few figures this year because (as others have pointed out) they were already planned out. Next year I suspect the Club will be the only act in town (and since that will be their last year, I doubt we get anything groundbreaking). After that, I think the line will essentially die, at least for a while. My prediction is that GI Joe will be a very minor part of the "combined universe" of Hasbro's lines. This will translate into us getting a few GI Joe characters in with a mixed toy line once in a great while. Watch these be of a greatly reduced "kid friendly" quality, and only be a few core characters (Snake Eyes, Duke, or SS most likely). They will have greatly reduced articulation and might not even be made in the 4" scale anymore. I hate to be pessimistic, but this is what I foresee. I think Hasbro really blew it with the Retaliation movie line and never recovered from it. I think eventually they might relaunch a modern era line, but it might be years from now. Until then, maybe a "Black Major/Red Laser" will step up and pick up the slack. I know MGR is going to get a lot of my money if the line is done for a while. |

JediJones, I agree with you on some of the repaint figures - I'm sure you understand that a Brand Manager doesn't get the final say on chosen deco for a figure, and sometimes you have to pick your battles. You have your Gung-Ho/Shadow Guard story completely backwards though - what's your source on that? Thanks, Mark |

I appreciate the (mostly) kind words from the Joe community - it was a thrill to work on my all-time favorite toy line. I wish I had been attached to G.I. Joe when it had more item count and tooling budget attached to it, but we did the best we could with what we were allocated.

Thanks, Mark I know you can't answer a lot of questions right now but I really hope you can share something more to us. Will you attend this year's con? |

BearViper, thanks for the kind words - I did my absolute best for the brand and the fans. I'm under NDA so I won't be whispering or hosting any "Q&A" sessions. I won't be attending this year's JoeCon.
