I hate to nit pick but they can't even add gijoe to the illustration for hascon? Also I watched TED 2 last night and none of the scenes inside the Hasbro building had any joes in them. They had plenty of the other brands on display but gijoe was awol as expected. Its almost as if Hasbro is somehow avoiding promotion of gijoe. Must be a sign of the times.

You guys need to get over this persecution complex. There is no conspiracy against the GI Joe brand. The reality is that GI Joe has been unable to garner half the success that many of Hasbro's other brands have been able to. And because it isn't that successful, Hasbro isn't devoting resources to prop it up. BUT, if you scroll down on the HasCon website, the GI Joe logo IS proudly displayed among the many Hasbro house brands. Further, good ole' Darryl DePriest is highlighted among the included guests, attached to GI Joe, Stretch Armstrong and Micronauts. So I guess we'll see how this shakes out this fall.

I don't think it's nefarious. They licensed out G.I. Joe cons to FunPub, so they can't use it for their own con. Just like they can't use Star Wars or Marvel because they don't have licenses to run cons for those. Seems like their one loophole is to bring in Stan Lee as a Marvel-related guest.

Well I wish Hasbro the best. I hope that they know what they are doing. Conventions are not easy to run. Just guessing by guest list, but seems GI Joe, as we feared, isn't being considered as the "main draw". Really hope FP and Hasbro work out a extension to keep Joe Con going.

Went and got some more coffee and want to add something....
I love Transformers and Star Wars too. I have never been to a tfs or star wars focused convention. However, I get my fix for all my interest every year at C2E2 as I'm sure others get from SDCC. They are huge awesome conventions that cover all brands on one floor. What makes Joe Con so amazing , even as a much smaller venue, is that is is 110% ALL GI JOE. From the attendees talking Joes while waiting in CLub Store lines, to cruising the floor from booth to booth in a GI JOE candy shop to getting real GI JOE con exclusives....It is a celebration of GI JOE. I don't have the confidence in Hascon to deliver that experience and I don't think Hasbro as a company has enough to sustain my interest at a convention. Just TFS and Star Wars with minor nods to their other brands wont be enough to lure me to book a ticket to Rhode Island. On top of that, if in fact FP does not get renewed and Hascon becomes the very symbol as to why Joe Con is dead, will there be any resentment or boycotting? What makes anyone think Hasbro is in this for the long haul? FP has been there for 20 years. I don't think Hasbro has that kind of roots in the annual convention arena. |

The fact it is even acknowledged in the press material should be a relief in and of itself. My feeling is that Hasbro wants to redevelop itself into a multimedia company akin to Disney (with Hascon being their equivalent to D23). I strongly suspect Hasbro will want to continue this for a good while, but if they decide not to pursue...I'm sure there are other entities willing to take up FunPub's spot in supporting official Hasbro brand conventions. The bigger question will be if GI Joe is even relevant enough to support any of those efforts.

FunPub would not sign up to do a G.I. Joe convention if they thought their business was going to be cut into by a competing convention putting G.I. Joe in its banner. Hasbro retains the right to produce and sell their own G.I. Joe toys anywhere they want, but surely NOT to run a G.I. Joe convention without violating their agreement with FunPub. Would their deal allow Hasbro to let ANOTHER outfit run a G.I. Joe convention too? Would FunPub want that? Then why would Hasbro be allowed to do it themselves, something equally damaging to FunPub? And mixing Joe in with other brands in convention theme is not enough of a gray area to get away with it.
G.I. Joe does more than "barely sustain" a retail exclusive line. Last year's TRU exclusive line sold out at TRUs nationwide. It was a smashing financial success for TRU. The brand has also had two high-grossing live-action movies, ranked 22nd and 18th worldwide in their years. If brand strength was what determined what went into their convention banner, G.I. Joe would be there because it out-ranks every other in-house brand they have besides Transformers in visibility and interest. That's why there isn't a Micronauts con or Monopoly con. I can all but guarantee you the ONLY reason G.I. Joe is not in the banner is because the contract with FunPub does not allow it. The renegotiation happened with the specter of HasCon hanging in the air and would've been addressed in their extension. Last edited by JediJones; 05-23-2017 at 01:22 PM.. |
