Do I need to click the link? Or is it yet another announcement informing the general public about how Hasbro's sales are good..in fact great..never been better..through the roof!!
No wonder. They've not done much in 2016, they saved an arm and a leg not shipping much product, they are no longer paying someone for paint qc, and they have cut back on articulation. And of course kids, who don't buy or have an interest in toys these days, are just keeping the shelves bare obviously since there's little to nothing for collectors on SW and Joe Homefront and they already make up an insignificant total of sells anyway. Are these actual profits or or just investor cash not spent? In a world where stocks are constanly ebbing and flowing and usually taking a hit,it's amazing that somehow Hasbro and it's toys just keep reaching new heights. Bullshit.

TRU, Walmart, & Target's Transformers displays have been puny & unmaintained for the last 6 months. The only thing I can think of is that they are less "toy maker" & more "brand manager", farming out their in house IPs to non toy merchandisers.

No mention of Joe? Eh, honestly, who gives a sh**. We've got Boss Fight and Fresh Monkey and Marauders. Hasbro can take a long walk off a short pier for all I care.

What we are seeing is Hasbro making the transition from toys to media. That is why there is a work in progress for a merger with Mattel. Mattel has more factories than Hasbro and has a good hold on distribution. (They are also capable of cstering to children AND collectors, the latter with subscription services that Hasbro has stated it's not interested in doing.) Hasbro has lost some factories, their qc has gone to shit and they lost some two dozen molds. Hasbro also recently confirmed that 3/34 are for kids, hence the 5POA takeover and 6in is aimed at collectors. And they tried to pull a fast one on everyone at last year's fan choice poll. So what we are seeing is a vastly different Hasbro. And really, the end of the collecting days for collectors. Unless you like something made for an 8 year old. Hasbro is becoming more and more irrelevant.

I do chuckle at the irony of this statement.

There really isn't any irony to the statement. Years ago, before Hasbro transitioned from a toy to a multimedia company and before they had several internal problems, it was a company that was capable and willing to cater to children and lifelong collectors.
Think you'll ever see anything like the 25th anniversary lineup again? Keep dreaming. Excited about another lineup of a limited run, retailer exclusive handful of repaints for this year? Enjoy, it's the last one. Happy about the FSS lineup of more Frankensteined 25th era Joes? At $30-40 dollars a pop, have at it----for two more seasons. Then it's done. Because the Joe you know and love is over. You haven't heard moaning or seen fan mass exodus from the brand as you're going to see after Hasbro reveals it's new idea for G I Joe. Or how about Star Wars? Joe couldn't even be a pimple on the ass of Star Wars, and yet look what has happened to it too. Since 2012, quality control has fallen head long off a cliff. TFA was the biggest Star Wars movie of all time and while one could find Kylo Ren cereal, pajamas or even kleenex tissues, the toy aisles were almost non-existent for months. What did show up was no longer what Hasbro had been doing for years, but quality and technology on par with 1978. A G I Joe from 1982 had more articulation than a movie themed Star Wars figure in 2015... For the collectors, because SW has a fan base much larger than Joe and Hasbro can afford to cater to both, the articulated suddenly became a retailer exclusive. Or you could shift to the 6 in stuff, or you could just walk away, which is what thousands have done. So now, in 2016, whether it's G I Joe, Transformers or even Star Wars, even though it doesn't have to be so, you face empty shelves with spotty distribution, lower quality control and ever increasing prices. What remains are hero mashers, micro machines and 5 POA action figures--at the same price you paid for something with inferior quality in 2008-2011. Yes, gone are the golden days of collecting. But you go ahead and have yourself a good chuckle over it.

It's the end of the world as we know it, according to some, but I not only feel fine...I give no shits. This is a hobby for me, and all about fun, but when it's over, I'll probably actually be relieved. I'm happy with what I have and don't really feel the need to add to it compulsively. If us old fart collectors are no longer a viable enough market to cater to, so be it. Last edited by SmokeBellew; 07-19-2016 at 10:23 AM.. |
