I'm neutral on Goldmsman. If you look at his imdb entry, I think the worst that you can say is that a lot of his work has been sort of painfully average with occasional spikes up or down in quality.
The real question is who's going to be in this new writers room? And, will they be able to produce: a. Good scripts b. Scripts that the studio will actually make c. Scripts that respect what makes the source material work I think we all know that there will be changes between a source and its adaption. It's a question of understanding why people enjoyed a property in the first place and using the correct supporting details to reinforce that feeling in the new version. (IMO, that's what the Marvel movies do so well. They aren't slavish, but the filmmakers know the right bits to use.) In the meantime, reports out of the Transformers writers room suggested that different writers sparked (see what I did there?) to different aspects of Transformers lore - Beast Wars, for example, or an animated origin movie set on Cybertron. What would we want to see in a similar vein? a.) a classic war movie set in the 60s starring straight-up GI Joe himself b.) a 70s set Adventure team movie c.) a cold-war GI Joe RAH with an early version of the team vs. the Oktober Guard d.) an Araskikage ninja movie e.) what else? |

Im sorry, but unless they hire, Hama, Jerwa, Trimpe or someone else that wrote a Joe comic before IDW took over, none of us will be happy about the creative team.

there were dinosaurs, people with gills, ghosts, on second thought a Gamesmaster movie with a take on him like some psycho Joker type character that plays games with real people could be really interesting. SAW meets Joker meets GIJOE... Quote:

How are you going to create a GIJOE cinematic universe? The concept is to have a bunch of solo movies? Snake Eyes gets a story, then Colonel Hawk gets a story of forming the Joe team, then we get a story involving Destro and the Iron Grenadiers? I guess it could work... and now I am going to defend Batman and Robin, yup defend it because most people did not get what was attempted. Schumacher was trying to recreate the 1960s series. That was his whole intention. The problem was we had just been introduced to Tim Burton's Batman, and we liked it. So when Schumacher tried to go backwards and make it light and fun like the TV show with bright colors and over the top villains...it backfired big time. The script was not the problem with Batman and Robin, it was the way the script was interpreted after just recently switching gears. It was too drastic of a change too soon. I am still going to take a wait and see approach, This could be a good thing, it could be a nightmare.

Whatever, dude, we don't see eye to eye on this. The difference being that you're too close to it and I have some perspective. You're pretty much a typical comic geek, which isn't representative of the general population. I also hope you realize that those "character dynamics lifted from the comics" had a helluva lot to do with Whedon's script/direction and the actor's performances.

So let me get this straight.
GI joe has a new brand manager. GI joe was mentioned by name at investors day. And now there is a whole team of writers doing ninja stuff with pens and paper trying to fix this franchise? ...LIES...ALL LIES...and I'm not going to let the hostages go! |

BUT i am not optimistic it will help gijoe 3 find any traction. The cast has moved on with thier careers, most notably Dwayne Johnson A quick google search, and DJ is already working on 4 movies for 2016-2017: journey 3, Moana, Central intelligence, and Fast & Furious 8. |

Movement for our brand is a good thing. I hope they don't do anything wacky like try mash ups with other brands. I think Retaliation, with a few of the scifi elements from ROC, would make a great movie.

Not sure if serious?
Mr. Goldsman has won an Oscar along with 4 other awards, has been nominated 14 times and has a long list of accomplishments underneath his belt. Yes, he was a writer on Batman and Robin...but if given the choice, would you prefer that Mr. Chu come back? We can't agree on so much it is hard to truly make everybody happy. Finding a balance between ninja and commando is next to impossible. Real world terrorism is a little too real for us these days and to "cartoon" it up comes off as insulting. What team members do we include and who will be shortchanged? GI Joe will have a place in my heart forever and I truly hope we can see an incarnation that isn't as divisive as the previous two. Or at least we have matured enough to not let it get to us as bad. In the end I will watch it and enjoy it for what it is. An escape from reality for a short time and one way or the other a reminder of just how lucky we were to grow up when we did. |
