Understanding everything that goes into just setting up a KS campaign I suspect that's taking all the attention that's not being given to the site business (and doesn't MJ have a real day job that keeps the MTF site afloat; he's a lawyer, right? I seem to remember hearing that way back in like 2007/8 when I met him at the JoeCon). Once it's completed and turned over to the factory he might turn his attention to this.

Isn't there a proviso that if the goods cost a certain amount the seller is exempt from having to do the paperwork? I think DNL said that they'll still ship tp Europe, but you have to order a minimum amount.

I have been trying to avoid getting too involved in this debate for fear of coming across as pedantic, but I just can't help myself (warning, heavy elements of sarcasm are mixed in with the following points).
Quote:
Even a company of less than 10 people is expected to file accounts so they presumably already employ the services of an accountant or bookkeeper. Would they have to pay them more to submit these returns for them, yes, would it cost less than they are losing in profits from the missed sales, only they can answer. I would have thought the bigger problem would be adjusting their software to collect the tax at the point of sale. Not something I am an expert in but I would have thought that any commercially available sales software in the US would have capability for it to allow for the various states sales taxes. However... Quote:
So I know that ebay used to have a thing for shipping overseas, you could basically ship to a domestic hub and then ebay would ship overseas for you.
I don't know if they even still do that, but I wonder if you went through ebay or another third party if that would work? Quote:

no, because, again, it's still requires them to register in any EU nation or the UK that they sell to and then file tax returns and sales info.
I heard Canada and Australia might have something similar in the pipeline, so MTF business is going to wind up coming down to the US and dependent territories and bog all else. I also heard Canada were bringing something similar in, I thought Australia brought it in a couple of years ago. Quote:
Honestly, this seems like the best hope for EU buyers but MJ would have to run a separate inventory just for eBay-listed goods. If he did that (and up-charged to cover eBay fees, lost item refund claims, and the extra work involved in maintaining a separate inventory) and limited his shipping locations to just EU countries on his account I think it could feasibly be done, just leaving the inventory hassle as the main disruption to his operations.
Unless there are other tax implications, it's something I would definitely pilot test if I were MJ, but we're on the outside looking in. Assuming he wants all the business he can get, he must have his reasons if he isn't entertaining the idea. Maybe he will, one day. In the meantime, just plan on using either a trusted US contact or a professional re-shipping service. You UK and EU buyers are not out of the game, you just need to work with the consequences of your UK & EU protectionist policies. It would cost the buyer more but they can choose if they want to do that rather than pay a professional reshipper or don't know a US contact they feel they can trust. Quote:

There possibly is money to be made, which is why it is surprising that Marauder do not want to make it. |

Ironically I think there is (you would have thought the governments would be more concerned with catching the larger tax bills) but I don't know if that effects the requirement to register and submit the returns or just the collection and payment of the VAT. |

Since he sells out basically any high demand item he puts up, I can see why he wouldn't want the hassle of additional compliance. I also suspect that overseas fans of Marauder are a disproportionate presence in this thread compared to his overseas sales (I'm basing that on the fact he has no interest in complying with these tax schemes).

I came to peace with this decision months ago, and only really popped my head up again to point out that turning customers away from his product will impact the future kickstarters, which will affect what product gets funded for his remaining US customers to buy. |

Hey! We will give a sneak peek of the MTF Vietnam Kickstarter to the Marauder Mayhem Attendees on Friday night 6/25. We then plan to launch the Kickstarter event between 6/30 to 7/3. Thanks again for your support! MJ

Personally from the aspect of being a buyer in a business that deals with a lot of overseas tape and hassle, I wish we could live by the 80/20 rule. 20 percent of your people give you 80 percent of your profit, and 20 percent of the people give you 80 percent of your challenging situations.
Guessing his profit analysis to challenge just made it not worth it, sucks but well MTF will keep surviving. Personally I am more worried about the shift to 1/6 scale figures and accessories, and that the 1/18 market is going to disappear completely one of these days. Then again I'll probably be retiring and not giving a crap by that day too...guess we'll see. |

...There is no need to have separate inventory, or create lots of individual listings in ebay. Buyers could order as usual from the Marauder website but the only payment method they offer to affected countries is "ebay". Once the order has been placed Marauder create a listing for the total amount (plus whatever they want to add for ebay fees) and then email the buyer the listing number so they can go to ebay and purchase it. Once payment has been received from ebay then Marauder can ship the order out as normal.
It would cost the buyer more but they can choose if they want to do that rather than pay a professional reshipper or don't know a US contact they feel they can trust....

I wonder how much of their sales actually came from overseas or foreign countries? Like will this really put a hurtin on them, or will it just be a blip?
