This is also a rumor for Star Wars tooling from the Legacy Collection days from around 2008-2011, supposedly all or most of the molds and tooling for all SW figures from that era are lost or have been destroyed. *
No one has ever been able to officially confirm it though. But the fact that it is a rumor for both SW and GIJ makes me tend to think it is partially true, if not all. *Just saw Trigue also posted the same thing

The complication for Hasbro is that Lucasfilm owns all the toy tooling. If Lucasfilm somehow mishandled or misplaced manufacturing assets during the Disney acquisition, that's on them. If they wanted tooling destroyed, that's their call. At this point, Hasbro's probably squatting the license because they have so much to lose. A transfer in master toy license rights means a transfer of all that toy tooling to another manufacturer to use.
So Star Wars shouldn't be conflated with GI Joe. Hasbro outright owns most of GI Joe's mass retail creations. The most likely scenario is that both companies allowed manufacturing assets to go to shit because they either intentionally or unintentionally failed to maintain them properly. There's a point where making a pallet of new steel tools is just a better investment than restoration of a pallet of old ones. Last edited by pergola; 01-20-2023 at 08:23 PM.. |

I think a lot of molds in China were at or near enough their useful lifespan, so when Hasbro moved production to Vietnam, it was a no-brainer to scrap them rather than pay to transport them. I also suspect (as I've said before), the move to Vietnam coincided with Hasbro employing new/different manufacturing techniques that don't utilize traditional heavy tooling.

Found it! Here you guys go, video of Hasbro Star Wars team being asked about the old Legacy Collection tooling. It should start at the part where they are asked the question. It's from SDCC 2022, so it's recent.
edit: I messed something up, it doesn't start at the question. Skip ahead to 4:18 to see it. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Hasbro owns the Star Wars molds. There were times the old gijoe club used some of Hasbro's Star Wars molds. I doubt that would've been allowed if LFL owned it. But then again, that was pre-Disney I think. So it's mostly likely changed since then. |
