For some reason I keep on dreaming that Hasbro releases Cobra Missile Command Headquarters in plastic complete with an ICBM. I have no idea how that comes about, but in the dream it looks like an awesome toy. I hope for a great lineup of new vehicles and playsets for Gi Joe 3 in 2016.

Hasbro needs to resolve cost issues, so that they are not cutting back articulation. Cutting articulation like they did with some Retaliation figures- and reusing those parts in this years SDCC exclusive and in this years retail line will likely result in lost sales.

I passed on a lot of Retaliation figures because of the poor leg articulation on what would otherwise have been very cool figures.

^ Agree with both of you. It's totally unacceptable imo. I'm passing up on this year's SDCC just because of that actually. Those wave 1 Roadblock legs/feet are just horrible.

It they did that, maybe it would even lead to weapon and accessory packs like back in the days of old. I would be all over packs of helmets, belts, backpacks, and webgear.

Seriously, trimming paint or accessories or packaging clearly aren't enough to offset the higher PRODUCTION COSTS associated with figures with MORE articulation (Remember, Marvel Infinate and Star Wars Black 4" figures are now $13). Hasbro tried all that with the Dollar General Joes, but prices are still too high to meet even that standard (unless you guys want Joe to become a higher articulated copycat of The Corps). The sad fact is that the current market and manufacturing situation just isn't conducive to 4" super articulated action figures at a pricepoint everyone wants. Also, I don't see the fuss about the articulation in the RB legs: they are FUNCTIONAL, and I never saw the double jointed knee as being terribly useful anyway. Ankles are fine, but just wait a few years when your toys start falling over as the joint wears out.

Me personally, nothing. Since we were spoiled with better leg/feet articulations, it has become a standard for me. Anything less just doesn't cut it.
But to be honest, I'm not upset either since I've been spending too much on this hobby anyway. With the Tiger Force theme, SDCC exclusives, and the majority of the 50th offering this Fall, I see it as a blessing in a way. |

Years? LOL... they do that right out of the packaging. I personally do not care about more articulation in the ankles or double jointed knees... but I do not want t-crotches or 5 POA.

I don't understand this notion that POC was some pinnacle of quality. I own plenty of sloppy-paint POC figures and recall having to heat up quite a few of them to straighten limbs/loosen stuck joints. Granted, the quality of the 50th was pretty terrible on average, but I didn't have to work too hard to find good examples. I even ordered two Baroness/Lady J packs from TRU, sight unseen, and they were both good enough, with one really well-done LJ. Maybe I'm just lucky where it doesn't matter. *shrug*
Anyway, I think we're being a little too rosy in our hindsight assessment of POC...it had its issues too. The relatively poor quality across all toy lines is ongoing too, I was looking at the Avengers Black Widow/Captain America 2-packs and was disappointed to see that every Black Widow was wearing her eyebrows on her forehead. I also think we can probably count on this lower quality/softer/more bendy plastic being here to stay. I can live with that plastic so long as they quit painting eyes at different heights and angles and learn to paint a little closer to in-the-lines.

Sorry it took me a while to get back to you.
The press photos from Hasbro (across all lines) come in two varieties. The early shots are generally photos of paint masters (hand-painted prototypes). The second run of photos is of factory samples. Production-level figures sent to Hasbro early for evaluation. By the second round of photography, it's very uncommon for paint applications to change unless there is a running change at the factory. That's why I was convinced that most 50th Leathernecks would have camouflage on his legs and that most Vipers would have a full set of paint applications and most Lady Jayes wouldn't have completely crooked eyes. In short, the final product would (for the most part) look more like the factory samples that were photographed in the second round rather than the really poor samples that were on eBay early. That all turned out to be the case. The bad paint on the 50th figures was a QC issue, not a last-minute cost-cutting decision (cut paint apps) or a universal production change (mis-placed Lady Jaye eyes). This isn't to suggest that QC was not terrible on the 50th figures (it was). But the paint on the early samples that Hasbro had (which they use to check QC) looked pretty good, so I'm not surprised they were caught unaware by the final results. I went further into this here: JoeCustoms.com > View topic - 50th Anniversary Samples on Ebay |

Thanks for that! I was unsure if you meant the handpainted samples, but this all has been enlightening. I'm suprised that Weber was suprised.
