Who cares (except for those in NYC)? It's actually a good business decision for them, as the rent is insane. Yeah, I realize the marketing implications of being in Times Square, but Jesus, that's a lot of money to rent retail space.

Holy cow yeah. I was thinking like...tens of millions, not 100 million-plus. At that rate I'm amazed they've stayed this long.

Been in that store several times on different visits to NYC and found it to be... huge but no different or special than any other TRU that I've been in. 4 floors (I think?) of stuff, easy to lose your party if you get separated, and lots of pretty lights, but otherwise nothing special. I'd say TRU corporate loses nothing by closing that store and continuing on with their other stores with less expensive rent.

for me, this location is a big staple for Time Square. It's sad to see it go.. you could never really find anything worth buying there haha, but it always had cool displays. it was the last store left for me that gave me that feeling I had as a kid walking into a toy store with shelves upon shelves of toys stocked up! You don't really see that anywhere else anymore (at typical retail stores). Even when I had friends visiting me in from out of town who aren't into toys I'd still bring them there and they'd get all gitty walking around inside. It's a fun place! At least we still have the Hard Rock Cafe with their cool star wars display. I wonder if they will be giving away/auctioning off/selling their display stuff like FAO did a while back. That Millennium falcon ended up on ebay if I remember correctly.

Wasn't FAO Schwartz at this location before TRU bought them out? I've never been there but it seems more like a tourist spot than an actual store. It's hard for a non collector to go on vacation and buy a toy they could get at their local store.
That is a little foreboding though. The toy is dying. Enjoy it while you can!!! I've had mixed feeling about that Times Square TRU. I despised wading through tourists to get my toys and missed the previous locations that were geared more for locals and were basic brick and mortar store. The older locations had no crazy displays. I will miss the convenience of strolling 10 blocks to a TRU though and I will say that the TS Location got some primo stock first. It was a great location to get MP Transformers, or just about anything new. I used to balk at folks who said this or that was hard to find because other than Ren SS nothing was hard for me to find and that is all because of that flagship TRU store. While this will save me money I'm sure my collection will suffer from here on in because of it. Without my weekly toy therapy my work week may drag on that much longer. Lastly I won't be the hero to my nephews come Christmas time when no one else can find that hard to get "must have" item. Thankfully my daughter is now a teen.

Only ever wanted to go there because I had heard the elevator had Superman under it like he was lifting it up and down. I've never been to New York, though.
That rent is insane.

I have to say, it was an impressive institution but pretty much sucked for collecting. Over the years I found exactly one item there that I'd had a hard time locating - B&B Sgt Slaughter. I always felt that the Flagship location should have been above and beyond when it came to stock but it was just like any other TRU when it came to the hard things to find. The main difference was instead of dozens of peg warmers, they had hundreds (at higher prices).
IF TRU moves its efforts over to FAO then hat's fine by me but FAO has always been a niche store and has the smallest action figure section I've ever seen. Yes they have a small single shelf of a kiosk set aside for Joe peg warmerss but if there was a hard to find item I wouldn't even try FAO (which is closer to me)I leu of the TS TRU.

That was the Warner bros store that used the be on 5th and 57th (2 blocks from FAO)at the Fuller building. The Wrner Bros store had closed in the mid to late 90s. That elevator was really cool though because you could see it from the st. At the TS TRU the is a larger than life Superman catching the front of an 18 wheeler that's crashing through the ceiling. Superman is saving all of the shoppers in the act. It's static but really cool. When I go back to work tomorrow I'll try to get some pics.
