I have to say, it was an impressive institution but pretty much sucked for collecting. Over the years I found exactly one item there that I'd had a hard time locating - B&B Sgt Slaughter. I always felt that the Flagship location should have been above and beyond when it came to stock but it was just like any other TRU when it came to the hard things to find. The main difference was instead of dozens of peg warmers, they had hundreds (at higher prices).

Before that they were right across the street, but still on 58th street between 5th and Madison avenues. They moved to this location back in 1986.

not a big loss. it kinda sucked for being label "flagship" They were always about $2-$4 higher and would get stuff later than other tru. My son will miss the carnival wheel tho.

Too bad. It's a cool store. My son picked up a Crimson Hiss for me from there on one of his trips.

Never been there, but can't say I'm too surprised. The overhead on that location is probably ridiculously high. The company might well save millions of dollars by closing down that store.

I lived in NY but never been to NYC, I would have made a trip there just to see this store but I had just moved to Florida and don't think I will ever set foot in that state again. The TRU here is always empty like a ghost town, store in the same strip mall are already closed.

I had recently visited there in November last year. Times Square was impressive enough but the TRU was incredible yet crowded since it was post- Black Friday. It was so crowded that we didnt bother going down to the basement.

It's not the end of the World. In the article, it states why TRU decided not to renew it's lease - the cost of rent.
The asking rent on the ground floor in the 150,000-square-foot building is $2,500 per square foot, $150 per foot on the lower level and $350 a foot on the second floor, the broker said. Toys R Us is paying about half that since commencing to rent at the location in 2000, Mr. Mendelson said. The article goes on to say that TRU has not confirmed moving anywhere else yet, although a broker is noted as speculating that TRU might move it's location "up the road" Another broker said Toys R Us may be moving to Vornado Realty Trust‘s large retail space at the base of the Marriott Marquis at 1535 Broadway between West 45th and West 46th Streets, taking around 3,000 square feet on the ground floor and the entire lower level. The building houses the largest single LED screen in North American, which is now live |

The team members must not have been selling enough credit cards, reward cards, square trade plans, and batteries.
