Just release everything from the concept vault and maybe a few extras.
Seriously, why act like they are interested in the brand while continually, Hasbro gives G.I. Joe the short end of the stick while dedicating uber amounts of resources to Transformers and Star Wars for the last eight years? I can't be that hard, every other established line has a presence in retail year round except for G.I. Joe. So yeah it is mostly their fault.

I can't be that hard, every other established line has a presence in retail year round except for G.I. Joe. So yeah it is mostly their fault. GI Joe, like Stella, simply needs to get its groove back. And because the property doesn't seem tailor-made to sell toys (like TF and SW); especially in an era where jingoistic militarism is at an all-time low, Hasbro understandably has to find the right way to get the property to work. In some ways I think we need to be thankful they haven't buried the brand in a vault. Things could be easier in getting it to market, but they haven't been and yet Hasbro is still trying. They should be- at least to some degree- given huge credit for that. Now we just need to wait and see what Joe Con reveals as far as their plans. I'm just thankful they have any at all. The first movies toys didn't sell... like at all. Take a second to let that process. When you put potentially millions behind a line; marketing, production, etc, only to have the line fail miserably it certainly requires a review of line strategy. Then they come out with the cartoon and although they produced figures for it (mostly to satisfy the diehard collectors and to have something as filler for the line at retail) one gets the impression that line didn't move much product beyond those aforementioned collectors.
Basically, if they sell 5,000,000 Destro figures, that shows a good demand- but if they make 15,000,000 Destro figures, that'll mess up the retail situation, big time.

I don't really agree with you first statement- the toys from 'Rise of Cobra' DID sell, they were just overproduced. Hasbro got caught by surprise with how huge of a hit the first Michael Bay Transformers movie was, and didn't have enough product in stores to meet the big demand (I don't know how many of you folks are Transformers collectors, but for a while, the Deluxe size Bumblebee, a $10.00 figure, was selling for $35.00 at conventions and online, until Hasbro produced more). Hasbro didn't want to get caught in the same situation with 'Rise of Cobra,' so they made the initial waves of product in huge quantities; so, when ROC wasn't nearly as well-received as Transformers, stores, who ordered in mass quantities thinking they'd have another Hasbro movie tie-in hit, ended up with more quantity than there was demand for.
Basically, if they sell 5,000,000 Destro figures, that shows a good demand- but if they make 15,000,000 Destro figures, that'll mess up the retail situation, big time. All I was really trying to say is that Joe has had a hard time at retail since at least ROC, and was prior to that enjoying a resurgence due mostly to collector good will, but still didn't have a true 'direction' (as appears to be what they are doing now). In other words, the brand is just now getting its ducks in a row as to how to tackle a strategy, which is what it's been lacking literally for years. As to how effective that will prove to be who knows, but it's the first time in a long time that they've attempted to do something 'new' with it. |

If all these ROC figures and Retaliation figures didn't sell, then where did they go? Because it's not like there were pegs and pegs of these figures on clearance...well, not in my area.

Of course!
Although there won't be any Joe toys at Toy Fair, I'm really interested in Hasbro's appearance at JoeCon. I'm cautiously optimistic that there's a whole bunch of awesome coming our way. |
