G.I. Joe: Cobra #2 Review
This issue continues Chuckles’ venture into Cobra. How much darker will his mission become? In this issue we see how secretive he has to be. We also see the measures that his fellow agents have to take, to maintain secrecy. More information about Cobra is revealed, and I have a feeling they are much larger than anyone anticipated. At this point, Chuckles has only had a brief glimpse, but there is much more than meets the eye. Chuckles is not perfect, and that is part of the reason Hawk chose him to infiltrate Cobra. We find out what one of Chuckles’ primary weaknesses is. Antonio Fuso and Chris Chuckry convey depth well in their panels. The colors complement the inks very well, and in one panel, where Jinx and Chuckles part ways in the distance, the colors are held back and the text bubble is drawn with broken lines. This is a good way to signal the discreteness of these two out in the open. There is more to General Hawk than we have previously seen, and this issue shows his lack of empathy. There is a flashback sequence showing how Chuckles was “prepared” for his mission. Hawk is intelligent, but very harsh, and in this case, inconsiderate. He’s been stern so far, but after this issue he may lose some fans. I predict two things: Hawk will lose fans, and fans will pity Chuckles. Hawk seems less of a hero, and more of a desperate soldier; trying to fight an enemy he can’t exactly track using conventional methods. The colors suit the mood of each panel very well, emphasizing either the calmness, or the tension each scene. Pages 8-12 illustrate this very well. Chuckles meets a new woman, who instantly reminded me of The Baroness. He meets her at a dinner; an etiquette test for him by X. The dinner is guarded by guards who are clad in red, possibly precursors to the Crimson Guards. We saw some of these guys last time but this time we see them close up. At the dinner, Chuckles and the other guests feast, or try to feast on an ortolan. Well, to say the least, it seems fitting for Cobra members to eat. As Chuckles continues his mission, we can sense his faith in the mission dimming. Could there be any turning back, the further he infiltrates Cobra? This issue serves to keep us on our toes, and maintains the suspense from the last issue. I definitely get the sense that Chuckles is always at risk, and can’t really tell if he will remain a Joe by the end of the series. It keeps me looking forward to more. |

I like Hawk the more I see this side of him. Making me like him even more. Here's a guy that will do whatever he needs to in order to complete the mission.
It makes him more of a hero in my book. Part of it could also be that he's upset with himself, and not happy with the man he has to be, because of what he knows he has to do to accomplish and complete his mission and make the world safer. There's probably a self-loathing component to him. He probably doesn't like the face that stares back at him in the mirror. He doesn't like doing this to Chuckles, but he knows he has no choice so he'll keep doing it and worst for as long as it takes to do what is needed. Just doesn't mean he'll sleep well at night or like himself in the morning.

I'm not a fan of Christos Gage, and the story is not altogether an original one for GI Joe, but this is becoming one of the better Joe books.
It's a pretty good read, I just wish the art was better. It was difficult for me to tell if the "girl-friend" was Jinx when we see her at the party. Overall, this issue has made me want to buy the next one. Well done.

Jinx is a main character of this book, and she is equally or more so the infiltrator. It was just too convenient that Hawk breaks up their contact, and then a girl that looks too much like her is the girlfriend of the big boss. Especially the scene with the wine, her waiting for him in the rain, the similar make out scene. Jinx, all the way. ;)

Jinx, all the way. ;) Is Jinx good enough to turn him away from a situation that he may find himself sucked into and hard to break away from? The stakes must be higher now that a hot woman from Cobra has seduced him. |
