I'm more concerned about Dreamworks Animation in this merger than I am Hasbro. For Hasbro it'd be hard for this to be anything but a good thing, but Dreamworks Animation is pretty much the #3 (arguably #2) CG Animation studio out there (behind Pixar and maybe Disney Animation), and Hasbro apparently didn't handle the Hub so well. I'd be concerned that they may see a major talent drain at DWA if Hasbro gets heavy-handed.
As noted, this can't really be anything but good for Hasbro's brands, though it becomes a question of Paramount's contract for Transformers and G.I. Joe and how long it lasts before we might see, say A CGI Joe or Transformers film. I suspect My Little Pony will be the top of the list to get the Dreamworks treatment, though. |

Anyway, the entertainment biz is a weird convoluted thing and it's not easy to guess how something like this would play out. One thing is certain, DWA is Disney and Pixar's biggest competition, (Disney currently distributes DW Studios titles in North America and other regions, but will not distribute DWA stuff due to competition factor) so a merger with Hasbro could conceivably spell trouble for any Disney-owned properties licensed to Hasbro. |

So would they be selling the toy franchises? An animation company won't want toys around to distract them.

They already license out the IPs for toys (Shrek and Dragon), so the same thinking for Disney moving the comics from Dark Horse to Marvel (owned by Disney) applies to this. It's a perfect synergy, and same reason why people thought Disney would buy Hasbro. Same company essentially makes the toys and the cartoons instead of having to license one out to get it made.

There might be some issues with the Marvel and Star Wars licenses once the contracts run out, if Disney sees this merger as competition. Which it may or may not.
But if they lose the Marvel/Star Wars licenses, that would most likely force them to concentrate on their other IPs: G.I. Joe, Transformers, Visionaries, M.A.S.K., etc... I think it is premature to start this line of thought: if this merger happens, we probably won't see a meaningful impact on Hasbro's operations for another year or two, at best. Quote:

I do think some of you are overlooking the biggest gain Hasbro's getting here, it's not just the current Dreamworks Animation library (Shrek, Dragons, etc), but the Classic Media library DWA got in 2012. In that acquisition, they got rights to a HUGE range of things from pulp comics (Turok, Solar, Magnus), multigenerational kid properties (Casper, Richie Rich), family properties (Lassie) and the Filmation catalog. Yes, that's right, if this goes through, Hasbro would then own the most significant media associated with rival Mattel's most notable inhouse action figure brand :p

I want to be optimistic and excited, but I Guarantee you they will make the figures that result from this purposely not compatible or fit in with our current ones in some way...goofy stylized homo animated caricature sculpts would be my first guess or a stupid scale change or likely both. On the other hand I bet the cartoon will actually be good.
But write it down Im calling it now... a concerted effort to make a product that doesn't fit with what we have always collected, animated exaggerated facial features.

To be brutally honest, you might as well pucker up as I really DO expect Hasbro to drastically cut back (if not outright abandon) "what we have always collected" (Even though that statement is something of an oxymoron: you're probably referring to ME figures which didn't exist until 2007. Which came at the expense of "what we always collected", the o-ring format in use from 1982-2006)

I just mean guys about 4 inches tall with sort of realistic faces.
and I think I am on the right track just because if I assume the worst knowing how marketing gaffots treat properties like this, I can follow the progression to the next step, plus they always follow a predictable pattern and never have any hint of original thought. They will make goofy Clone wars style stuff, and it WILL flop within two waves. We all loved this so much... http://www.panelsonpages.com/wp-cont...09/07/fig2.jpg The only way I will buy any of it is vehicles if it is sort of in scale with the real stuff and they use the abortion of a line to either reissue old vehicles or create new ones in the classic style. the silly cartoony faced figures they are going to make can rot on the pegs I wont ever get the first one.

I'm all for Hasbro doing whatever needs to be done to get G.I. Joe selling again.
Catering to us is obviously not doing it. I would have been really curious what the original Renegades, more cartoony, designs would have done at retail. The two vehicle's, Flint's Jeep and Coyote, don't really match well with the "real stuff".
