They had me at the start of the second paragraph!
The world has changed and so must G.I. JOE—LEAD BY SCARLETT, the once-revered G.I. JOE team faces an unthinkable reality where Cobra has become an unlikely peacekeeping taskforce. Utilizing real-world dangers and politics, this is a G.I. JOE comic the likes of which has never been seen. |

Cool. I'm looking forward to it. I just started reading the other IDW GI Joe titles, and I'm really enjoying those, so I'm sure I'll enjoy this one.

Side question - I have all the G.I. Joe IDW comics but I haven't read them yet. How do they compare to the Marvel run and Hama's continuation of that storyline through IDW's RAH series?

I wanted to limit the amount of comics I get and didn't pre-order the first issue. But damn! I loved her Republic Commando novels and this sounds better and better. I'm in!

I don't think I've read a Joe comic since the end of the DD run. It's not that I don't enjoy them, I'm just not much of a comic guy. This sounds pretty interesting, though.

Any time I see "G.I. Joe" and "gritty" in the same paragraph, I worry. Not that serious stories can't be good for Joe (see the G.I. Joe: Cobra series), but typically that's not what Joe has been about; even Hama at his peak was more about fun than realism. But, hey, if a realistic take on Joe what we need for it to succeed as a comic, that's fine with me.
Actually, I wonder, on a broader level, what is it that today's fans want from Joe. Should it be lighthearted like it was when we were kids (like in, say, the G.I. Joe/Danger Girl crossover miniseries), or should it be aged up, mature, and "gritty"? |

The "mature and gritty" fans tend to think the franchise should cater almost exclusively to adult collectors because that's the only people who are buying it anyway. The "lighthearted" fans tend to think the franchise still needs to try to appeal to children if it wants to survive long-term. As for the announcement, Traviss could be a good choice, though I definitely had some issues with her Republic Commando novels. I know other people really liked them, though. |

Apparently she was drummed out of service as a StarWars author and her canon largely paved-over in the "Clone Wars" animated series.
Part of which is that she portrayed Mandalorians and their associated training and equipment as sufficient to best Jedi one-on-one. At casual glance, it appears she has a very similar take on the Galactic Republic as I do. I think she *may* work out well as a GI Joe writer since it looks like SW fans demand a much stricter canonical purity.
