The paint apps on these figures this time around is crap. Typically Hasbro's mass produced Joe stuff is pretty iffy anyway, but the QC on this latest round looks to take that bar even lower. For instance; the head on my Destro had a big chunk of some chalky material that not only marred the paint, but wouldn't come off fully via light scraping and essentially had to be trimmed off with an x-acto and repainted over. Sucks too because Destro was one of the figures I was most looking forward to out of all these sets.
Also, my repack Duke has a stray black paint mark on his face. I don't really care to remove it since I won't be keeping this figure, but still. IMHO, if it weren't already evident, fail on QC this round Hasbro. The figures themselves are kitted up nicely and the new BFS head sculpts truly feel 50th Anniversary treatment. Those guys always do stellar work even if they are saddled with shoddy production this time out. |

the figures look pretty good but did anyone from the military "proof read" the file cards? Leatherneck's card said "tech sergeant" while he was in the 1st recon battalion... "tech sergeant" is an Airforce rank. He was a Marine. That is, imho, sloppy. Hasbro has done this in the past with mixing up weapons, ranks, and other military things but hey, its something you Marines out there should have picked up on. I was a sailor then soldier and I even caught the mess up. LOL! anyway, the figs look good. I hope Hasbro keeps making waves of these and mass produces them so we have some real Joes to collect not those lousy movie "ninjas"
On that note, a lot of the joes have ranks that don't really make a ton of sense. First off, Shipwreck is a chief petty officer. CPOs don't wear the dogdish and dungarees, they wear officer uniforms, khakis and such. Also, a lot of corporals/E-4s. I would think that given the elite status of the team and the time a serviceman or woman would have to be in to get into the joes, E-4 seems unlikely. By the time a soldier goes to boot camp, goes to all regular schools, then is in the fleet/operating forces long enough to become an expert and prove they are an exceptional soldier, then, get selected to the joe team and do any joe training, I would imagine they would be E-5 or E-6 before being active deploying member. So I "retcon" or justify the strange ranking. Basically, when a new team member is selected for the joes, his rank in the joe team is based on what he is qualified for and needed for in the joes. Steeler is a 2nd Lt. You are only a 2nd Lt for two years, and easily a year of that will be taken up in training before going to operating forces. Lt Falcon, even if a first lt, is unlikely. The green berets only take captains first off (I do believe there is some execption for exceptional performers or prior enlisted GBs), and the same applies-infantry officer school (probably 3-6 months, don't know how the Army does it) Airborne school 3 weeks, ranger school 12 weeks, Q-course plus MOS training 4-14 months. Plus, he had to prove himself as a soldier prior to the Green Berets, and then again to get to the joes. But joes need some junior officers, perhaps Steeler and Falcon are actually captains or majors in the real army and are paid as such, but while in the joes, wear the rank and do the job of a lieutenant. my two cents anyway. |
