It's just that with Star Wars they were able to hit the most iconic characters right out of the gate by going in original release order. With G.I. Joe, that doesn't work that well. If they do Snake-Eyes, Cobra Commander, Cobra Soldier, Grunt and Scarlett from that first year that would be fine. Stalker and Rock 'n Roll are next in line, but after that it gets very thin. I don't want sales to be weak just because they didn't pick the right characters for the launch. 1983 through 1986 are all stronger years with more appealing figures overall than 1982.
Granted, Gentle Giant themselves may be trying to cut costs for the launch by taking advantage of the heavy parts re-use in 1982. But that's part of what makes them more boring figures. Last edited by JediJones; 10-11-2014 at 07:47 PM.. |

A very cool but expensive way to customize with these. They look to come apart like the originals.
An for the Straight vs Swivel argument. You don't need to buy a all new figure. They can sell just the waist and arms and you can choose how to display it. |

It is strange we've seen 5 Joes and no Cobras despite there being 3 to pick from in 1982 and most of them far more iconic and with more longevity in the storyline than the greenshirts. I hope they have someone running this line who understands the nuances of the brand. Not someone who just thinks G.I. Joe means green army men and surely no one cares about these weird-looking Cobra Enemy guys.

While there is an argument to be said for the most popular characters, most of which were made popular by the cartoon, for many of us, GIJOE started in 1982.
Those first figures, and the comic in most cases, were what started it all for many of us. As a company who is focusing on nostalgia to sell this product; because face it, I see very few customs, dio stories or even play value in these, it only makes sense to hit that target market. These are obviously for display, to be hung on a wall or taken out and put on a coffee table or shelf. Conversation pieces. Should they start with all 1982 figures? That would be cool, and I know many have said they wanted an o13 set back in 2007 to start with. Maybe this time we get just that. I have to admit seeing that cheesy grin of Duke's in 1:6 scale would be amusing. I remember asking my Dad "why is Duke smiling like that?" Soldiers don't grin like that Dad!" or something like that...

I got a few Joes in 1982 as a kid but they didn't "wow" me that much or inspire me to collect them all. I went full force into ROTJ in 1983 and didn't get back into Joe until the 1984 as ROTJ was dying out. There were a few earlier characters I wanted to go back and get like Major Bludd, Gung-Ho, Snow Job, etc., but not the 1982 greenshirts. They were just too dull with repetitive design work compared to the newer years. 1985 was probably the peak year in every way. That Snake-Eyes just blew away the 1982 one, symbolizing how much the design of the line had improved in 3 years.

I want this line to succeed long enough to get an 84' Firefly and Storm Shadow, then I'm good.

You know I would have picked Snake Eyes as the first figure to get the Jumbo treatment. Granted he is not the 1985 version which would have been awesome but we are talking about the first couple figures.

SE will sell any time he's released. Rock N Roll has his fan base as well. I would have chosen Zap. As probably the least popular of the og 16 being the first release might have ensured more Zap sales as the first figure available. Kind of like a batting order, you build up to your heavy hitters.

I saw the preorder on BBTS this morning. I'm still on the fence about these. I'll likely get the SE, but I'm still not 100% certain. I've gone back and forth about thenSW BF Intel but haven't bitten yet.
