It's going to be very interesting to see how 3D printing pans out as a toy collector. Good to see that Hasbro is looking toward the future!

My guess, probably still have to buy figures.
Maybe certain playsets, or extra accessories can be downloaded and printed? Who knows, there are potentially endless applications. I will be watching this progress with great intent.

They probably will start with a fig that you buy with a code to then print out the accessory. Of course you will have to buy the specific printer and specific printing plastic first. Then I see later down the road, you have to purchase a code to print a certain figure. They could then make customizing sets with screws, adhesive, paint, decals, O-rings, more printing plastic, etc. Maybe they could sell the code with a resealable card and bubble for those moc people too. It basically pushes the labor to the collector now. Interesting. They could do this with vehicles too.

The possibilities really are endless... I mean, whatever they can design, we can have... We could get reissued figures galore, even though molds are lost... We could choose our own colours, etc... They could design an entire Flagg for f's sake, with very little inhibiting factors like toy store snot wanting it, etc. As long as we are willing to flip the bill on our end, of course. Not just downloading instructions, of course, but the cost of printing, plastic, etc...
How they deal with IP infringement will be a real issue. I mean, they can't really stop anyone from producing an updated Flagg, of course (they didn't design the Nimitz-class, after all), but... Well, all I know is that I'm glad I've got the vintage stuff now, so that I know they're originals.
