Our next review is based on the Diorama-like environmental piece named The Winged Victory of Samothrace - Pain to Victory. The set includes a piece of landscape and statue that resemble what one would find along the torn down streets of the Acid Rain World. The set also includes two..that's right, TWO Sol Commanders! The full gallery can be seen here Acid Rain - The Victory of Samothrace Let's get to it! Packaging As with all of the Acid Rain pieces I've been fortunate enough to hold in hand, The Winged Victory of Samothrace comes packaged in a sturdy box with outer sleeve. The outer box artwork depicts two Sol Commanders and a Speeder Mk II at rest, but at the ready. The artwork is perfect, as it portrays the gritty urban streets as war-torn and ravaged. The outer sleeve also has a large Acid Rain icon and of course the details of what are included. Again, to re-cap, the set includes:
The inner box resembles the box of the Quad Eyes, Speeder and single Sol Commander perfectly, which is great for someone who loves uniformity like me. Upon opening the box, you're greeted with foam inserts. The included items are separated on two "levels" - The first foam insert level has a Sol Commander and Statue, the 2nd a Sol Commander and base. As we've already seen the Sol Commander, my commentary forward will be based primarily on the Statue and base. ***DISCLAIMER*** Ladies & Gents, I know that my camera and picture taking abilities aren't the greatest. As such, if you would like any more images, from different angles, in a different light, etc., please do not hesitate to ask. Statue & Base The statue, prior to being placed on the base, stands at roughly 5 inches tall. The base measures in at 6 inches by 3 3/8 inches. Their combined weight comes in at an impressive 13.2 ounces. So to answer your question, yes, this has some weight to it! For those of you that create Dios or Environmental Arenas, I understand why you guys loving doing what you do so much. It's amazing how real this piece looks in hand; the colors really look like a statue that's been subject to a harsh environment for an extended period of time. The body sculpt is amazingly life-life and the detailing in the wings and gown are just top shelf. The base resembles an old city street. The detailing in the stone is amazing and really looks like an old cobblestone road. The bottom of the base has the Acid Rain World logo and web address imprinted on the bottom which I thought was a neat little addition as it doesn't take away from the piece. This example was signed; I'm not honestly sure if all will come that way. The included Sol Commanders interact with the piece perfectly. Their weathered appearances next to statue really makes me wish that OriToy would make a playset of a war torn city (hint hint to my friends at Ori! ) Since it's a Dio piece, you can use any item in your collection along side it. For grins & giggles, I used DG Shippy and Generations Scamper. I can't wait to see some of the pictures that you all post once you get this set in hand. As someone who doesn't make Dios or anything of the sort, this is really cool. I really love the whole aesthetic of the Acid Rain World and the Winged Victory of Samothrace Set is a great compliment to the figures and vehicles introduced as it's wave mates. Bottom line? - Get it. It comes with 2 Sol Commanders and an awesome Dio Scene for your shelf. You can't beat that. |

Our march through the Acid Rain World continues next week with the Speeder Mk-II. There are also two Stronghold reviews inbound - One based on the Desert Stronghold and a very special review by none other than Mr. Monte Williams! I can't wait to see what kind of awesomeness his camera cooks up!

Nice review--thank you! I'm increasingly intrigued by this line--I'm a Warhammer 40K fan and this stuff is very reminiscent the Imperial Guard. Any price info yet? Apologies if that has been addressed elsewhere.

45 for the statue set? That's a good deal. You're basically getting the statue and street for 5 bucks.

What does irk me is now I wish I had customizing skills so I could build a cityscape. |

Oh hell yeah. I'll save up for this set for sure. I say again: that statue is crying out to serve as background beauty in a Hellboy portrait, like the Medusa head I utilized here:
The Winged Victory piece looks like it popped right out of a Mike Mignola illustration! And in contrast to some of the other pieces, which one can perhaps argue are a good value, this is unequivocally a hell of a deal. Like you, I'm digging the overall aesthetic, too. I love love love the modern Joe stuff, particularly Pursuit of Cobra, but customizers have left me middy dissatisfied with anything that isn't at least somewhat weathered, so Acid Rain is right up my alley. Keep 'em comin'! |

Pretty fair representation of the Nike of Samothrace. Looks like they got the height pretty close, and 5 bucks for a hunk of cobblestone street and statuary isn't anything to sniff at.
