Saw this over on TNI and linked the actual article.
Hasbro profits are up 17% reporting $193 million thanks to Games an Girls toys. Unfortunately Boys toys fell 17%. I wonder why? (Sarcasm) Hasbro third-quarter profit up 17% - MarketWatch

Wow!! That should tell them they need to wake up and market the GI Joe brand better and start pushing them into big retail stores!!

The people analyzing the sales figures probably don't see it that way is all I'm saying. If boys toys on the whole are a shrinking segment according to their own sales records, including TF and SW as well as GI Joe, then I would not hold out much hope for them to hunker down and make a huge push to get that market share back using GI Joe.
EDIT: I just found an article that says TF and SW actually improved and "Marvel and other Boys Toys" were not doing well. Not sure what to think now. That means Marvel and the other boys toys are really bombing. Not good for us if GI Joe is included in that "other boys toys" Last edited by Dusty79; 10-21-2013 at 05:51 PM.. |

It might have a lot less to do with "Hasbro is blowing it" and more to do with "kids just aren't interested in 40 year old" bullshit.
Granted, I'll love that bullshit to my dying day, but let's call a spade a spade here gang... we're the model train collectors I used to make fun of when I was a hip little punk with my FLAK Cannon and open belly Tauntauns. It just can't go on forever. At least at mass retail. The 4" stuff is moving into that same space the 12" stuff did in the 1990s... less and less relevant, with an ever shrinking customer base. It'll get trotted out again, here and there, but I just don't see it going on much longer without a fresh cartoon that also becomes a hit. Plus the line needs to come down in price. The biggest thing I'm afraid of is the line moving to a club or online only some sort of exclusive line. I will not continue down that road. Like the above poster said I'll love gijoe till my dying day but all good things usually come to an end somewhere. I really think if it ever goes to a collector only line it'll surly die.

On CNBC, their public statement was that they did well overseas but sold weakly domestically.

And that is basically possible because they're just reusing the same body over and over again. You start factoring in the requirements for unique sculpts and massively articulated 4" bucks and you're in trouble. Kitbash city and con exclusives work for a small little pocket of collectors though. I wish them the best. Jesus I hope they squeeze that Vault Gung Ho out before the walls cave in. |
