I actually like Van Lente's take on things, there are certainly some things that are expected in a Joe book and he has not catered to anyone and just given us what we want. I prefer his stories over Dixon's by far. I loved the reality series take I thought it was quite clever. Everything that has been mentioned above as far as plot directions is too predictable. Van Lente is at least trying to spice things up. Hashtag was a perfect example of this. Fans ripped into the character without giving her a chance. Perhaps too many fans adhere to the ridiculous rules/archetypes of fan fiction and mary sues etc. Hashtag was supposed to be us, We were wearing her shoes and seeing things as we would in that situation, the POV for us in the midst of GIJOE as observers, and I really liked that.
The GIJOE extreme challenge was a great way to give Cover Girl, a supermodel of all things, a way into a combat unit. The whole hoopla about GIJOE being a covert group all depends on your favorite canon. GIJOE has been public in many versions. The uniforms? a way to show the Joes irritation at suddenly being made public. The romance between Duke and Cover Girl? A nice way to watch that relationship erode and possibly turn into one with Shipwreck, a little nod to both the cartoon and the DDP series. Van Lente changed things up just enough to make it interesting again without going into the extreme dark territory Cobra Files does. Is it perfect? no, but it is better than Dixon's extremely slow pace. Better than Marvel or Hama? of course not. I would dare to say it is much better than anything DDP put out. Including the Baroness baby arc Sins of the Mother. Actually I take that back, Joe Casey's Phoenix Guard arc was pretty good. I just hope that the next author after issue 11 does not turn everything upside down again. I'm not going to miss Van Lente but I don't think he should be raked over the coals either.
