I agree, that was pretty funny.

And I'll say it again. Devil's Due took a great comic series and made it even greater by making it seem like a real military suspense comic, not just a toy commercial. No one cared more about GI Joe than Josh. He made GI Joe matter again. He cared about the Marvel continuity and added to it. All for the better. No one would give a $#it about bringing back GI Joe if it weren't for Josh Blaylock and Devil's Due.
You can dispute that all you want, but you're fooling yourself. Doesn't mean he did a good job. There was no "real military suspense" to the DDP comic. It was light and fluffy. I think DDP took the marvel stuff and made it worst. It's on par with the "G.I. Joe Featuring Snake-Eyes" stuff. I've been around comics for a long long time, and have a ton of 'em. I remember the old trade paperback system, it meant something special if the storyline got made into trade paperback form. And those trades were a good 6-8 issues long most of the time. Real good bang for your buck. Now, it's 4 issues, 6 at the most. Storylines are written towards being turned into a TPB. It's not necessarily bad, for the most part. It's only when storylines are dragged out to fit the TPB format (kind of like making a TV series last another season past it's prime just to hit the 100 episode marker for syndication) that there's problems. I can't remember when it exactly started this way, but Marvel was behind it and it occured a little before the Ultimate Line started up.

I also think the whole robot bugs in the Pitt storyline is dragging on way too long. We had the same story in Marvel's #3, and it was only one issue. It's boring seeing the Joes having a hard time fighting a few robot spiders. What's going to happen when they have to fight thinking enemies?
Yeah, I know the reasoning behind making storylines fit trades. I'm fine with it. I'm actually trying to switch to trades. However, the spider drones could have been handled in an issue or two. Or built up to. In other words, they shouldn't be the focus of the entire storyline. I'm not a fan of the artwork. Joe comics have been plagued with mediocre art in the past (at times). I just find it somewhat generic. Not terrible. But not very inspired, either. How does everyone feel about Destro's face being exposed the entire time? I don't think he was every unmasked before. Does this ruin the mystery of the character for anyone? I'm actually enjoying the origins book more. I think Hama's doing a good job with that book, and it has some distinctive art. Hopefully, the current Dixon storyline wraps up soon, and we can see the Joes in a much less confining setting. |

And the first Image Joe storyline was terrible. It also featured nano-bots. I wonder if the movie producers just read that storyline and thought that was the comic that Joe fans were praising. It could explain the use of lame nano-bots in the movie.

I like Destro unmasked. It'll make the moment he puts the mask on, and it stays on (which we all know has to happen at some point), that much more tragic and meaningful.

This series is not doing much for me yet. The stories are too short, not much happens, there is no tension and the basic premise is being dragged on for far too long. This series may only last 10 issues for me. At $3.99 an issue there needs to be a better pay off each month. That being said, GI Joe Origins is very very good! Keep up the great work Larry Hama!
