Hello, I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. Joe fan since 1983.
I just felt the need to chime in on this. For the love of all things holy would someone explain to IDW, and Chuck Dixon especially, that having GI Joe feature the same 6 or 7 Joes over, and over, and over, and over completely misses the point of what makes GI Joe great.

I agree that GI Joe has always focused on a main cast of popular characters, but it used to have a rotating cast of supporting characters depending on the mission.
In the first issue of "Special Missions" Iceberg was with them on a mission in some desert city. You could just randomly pick another Joe and he or she would probably be more appropriate for that scenario. But Dixon has his favorites, and that would be almost okay if he actually added any character traits to anyone other than Scarlet and Mainframe with their puppy love. Everyone else is just "soldier #1", "soldier #2", "soldier #3" etc. Also, Dixon's use of Scarlett, Mainframe, Beachhead, Tripwire, Iceberg and Dial Tone as THE GI Joe team goes back way before the relaunch. He occasionally would have some random other Joes show up to remind us that Stalker, or Wild Bill, or Rock n'Roll still exist, but to hell with actually using on them for something other than a cameo. First paragraph you say that Joe has always had a main cast of popular characters (that's subjective, in this case Dixon uses an Alpha team) with supporting characters depending on mission. Third paragraph you say Dixon is doing what Joe has always done. He brings in supporting characters as the story dictates. I do agree that he hasn't spent much time developing individual personalities. Dixon's isn't for everyone. I have my issues with it, but I like that he focuses on a core mission team. I tend to not judge new works on how the old ones were, usually setting up for disappointment. Let each thing stand on it's own.

I may have misspoke in my third paragraph. I wasn't saying he brings in characters as the story dictates. I was saying he occasionally has other characters cameo but they are hardly ever integral to the story.
Didn't mean to start an argument, I just think its a shame that with 4 GI Joe books there are dozens and dozens of really great characters that hardly ever and/or never appear in IDW's GI Joe. |

The X-Men and Avengers focus on core groups even with dozens of characters to choose from. Much like Star Trek, there was always the bridge crew that did everything, even if it made no sense for the Captain and Head Doctor to be beaming down into trouble on a regular basis.

This turned out to be a really good read and the artwork was great in it. There is a Joe who pops up in it who fans had been clamouring for and his characterization was pretty good. And the Drednok's are pretty well done too.

Wow, did they really include the Cobra Para-Viper design in this comic? That's awesome!
