Box office numbers may not equal quality, but they DO equal success. For all it's changes, Transformers found an audience, and a very big one. If it had been the absolute travesty that the Trans-Fans were decrying it as, it would've had a big opening weekend and then dropped off big time, probably being off the top 10 in four or five weeks. Instead, it remained strong for several weeks, which implies that it got A: Good word of mouth, and B: repeat viewings.
All this, despite the rampant negativity among the previously-existing fanbase prior to the movie's release. That's the only correlation that people are drawing here: Changing a previously existing property does NOT necessarily contribute to box-office failure. That, and "nostalgia properties" bank more on names alone than rigid adherence to previously existing continuity. Most people that don't give G.I. Joe a second thought (read: most of the potential viewing audience) don't know or care if Ripcord is black or white, what nationality the characters are, where Cobra Commander comes from and how he operates, etc... Heck, most of the potential and desired audience for this film wasn't even born when G.I. Joe toons were on the air and Hama ruled the spinner racks at 7-11. They have virtually no exposure to G.I. Joe, so Hasbro is free to redefine it for them. We don't have to like it, but we're not the ones in control of the property. |

This is one of the things that might not be in the final film, you never know his nationality might be vague.
That's actually a good point. True, but what if the movie is going the same route as IDW, having Roadblock the character as Heavy Duty but only in name? As evidenced by G.I. Joe Origins #2, the Heavy Duty in IDW IS Roadblock the character, but is called Heavy Duty.

at the worst, this movie will be so bad and laughable that people will have to see it to see how bad it is for themselves.

Only in the minds of the most immature, obstinate fans. The prior portrayals will never go away. If a new generation sees Cobra Commander as a hamburger-faced asthmatic, what do you care? You've got "your" Cobra Commander and always will. The "history" is firmly in place and not going anywhere.
Unless you're just saying you're so utterly incapable of distinguishing between versions that you'll stop liking G.I. Joe/Cobra Commander altogether because this one particular interpretation isn't to your liking? I can't imagine that's the case, but if you're going to be getting rid of all your old G.I. Joe stuff because you can't enjoy it anymore, I'll be happy to take some of it off your hands if the price is right. I think most people, my self included, want a movie that respects a history that took 25 years to make. If your going to change most of the history and keep the film in the "spirit" of the line, then it's not Gi Joe. If you change aspects of the Bible then its not the word of Christ. A little over dramatic but you get my point. I'm all for change. It's what breaths new life into an old idea for the next generation. But do it in a way that doesn't alienate your core audience and educates the new audience on the history of the line while making it new and exiting. I believe RESOLUTE has bridged that gap very well from the teaser we have seen. Judging by recent polls, I'm not alone! It might be a fine movie once we all see it. Just, call it something other than Gi Joe.
