count me in the camp who want new writers.
Blindmaster saying, "our fellow G.I.Joes" the nanomite wars? Flint being given so little to do? The writing actually introduced a few plot holes rather than filled them.

I thought the movie was awful, and the director is almost always to blame for that, but in this case I feel like Chu deserves one more chance. Paramount and Hasbro are pandering to the lowest common denominator with these movies and Chu kind of got swallowed up in that.
For one, the "target seeking" bullet was just stupid. Doubly so since they gave it to their best sharp shooter (mouse) instead of their worst. Blind master should have been cut from that movie. I know there is a toy coming, but the character was odd and terrible to watch. I would have liked to have gotten to know mouse a little more before he was off''ed. I thought the pace of the movie was too rushed. I understand that it's necessary in the action sequences, but audiences need some down time to enjoy the plot (even if it is weak) The James Carville cameo was a waste of a few seconds of film. It's like the entire movie shrugged it's perverbial shoulders over the destruction of a major World City. It's only London, what's the big deal??? <---really?? To my knowledge, this is all stuff that the Director has control over. I feel certain loyalty to Mr Chu because he has been just so completely awesome with the fan base, but I don't know that he's my type of Director.

No matter who's directing or writing, I just ask that you PLEASE bring back Scarlett and The Baroness. G.I. Joe needs it's leading ladies back again, even if there are different actress. I hate recasting but I love the characters more.

I was having a discussion the other day about the pace of movies. In that conversation someone mentioned they noticed the younger crowd did not like Iron Man3. Why? because it was too slow in their opinion. They wanted more action and nonstop, myself I really liked IM3, and the story elements were what I liked most. despite the common criticisms. So to slow down GIJOE and focus more on plot, may not be such a great idea. I agree RZA was out of place. That was more one of those hey we know RZA lets throw RZA in there, decisions. Which BTW is how Sienna Miller got cast as the Baroness. There were things I did not like about Retaliation but the good outweighed the bad. I thought it was kinda weird to see Snake Eyes driving a vehicle myself. I get why, but it just seemed weird. did not like the Warden. I am ok there was no OMG they nuked London scene. The reactions of the world leaders was enough for me. In fact I was actually surprised the world leaders were initially shocked at the destruction. If anyone would react coldly to London being blown up it would/should be them. For them to put that aside and deal with the more pressing issue, the fact that their own countries were in peril, seemed pretty appropriate. There can be a memorial for London later and probably was one off camera, before the Joes ceremony. Problem is people like happy endings and they test much better overall compared to movies with sad endings. So we get a happy ending. Roadblock is going to go after CC and make him pay for killing the Joes AND for blowing up London.

I don't know how I feel about the idea of Chu returning. I don't post very often and am going to be long-winded for a sec. Bear with me.
I need to watch Retaliation again a few times to make peace with it. I honestly liked about half of it and felt very underwhelmed about the rest of it. A few reasons: We fans clamored for a recognizable Cobra Commander only to get the costume without a performance. That just came across as tricky. This time I guess we should specify the costume ALONG WITH the character. I don't like the idea of turning these long-awaited G.I.JOE movies into Rock pictures. I cannot even express how disappointing it is to be at this level of desperation by the 2nd film. Please stop with the "Rock invigorates dying franchises" bs. I like him but G.I.JOE is an ensemble piece, and to my mind becomes an in-name-only situation with the Rock as its lead. As criticized as ROC is, it had a pure vision of the story it wanted to tell and managed to do it with some style and economy. As a popcorn film it succeeded and may even obtain cult status one day. RETALIATION feels like it is destined only to be forgotten. This is because although RETALIATION may give the appearance that it fixed some things many didn't like about the first film, it accomplished this at the expense of having an identity of its own. The brutal truth is that it had almost nothing without those aspects it carried over from the first film. Bottom line, I saw RETALIATION in a packed theater with a genuinely surprising and game assortment of people and age groups, none of which I would say, probably read the comics. Why did people turn out in such numbers to see a comic book movie? This can only be because a lot of people actually enjoyed ROC, were entertained enough to go out and see its sequel. And in the end I got the impression, and its just an impression not a fact, that the audience kinda felt juked and bewildered with some of the changes. Such as: Duke leaving the film Original cast completely ignored Writing noticeably a step down from the first film Lackluster finale I think the average film-going public would have definitely preferred a more straight forward and comprehensible sequel, as opposed to this misguided clusterf243. And as a final gripe, I feel like the producer's have grown even more timid or afraid to depict Cobra as we all know it should be. That is, grandiose, baroque, grotesque and somewhat impressive. Seeing Cobra represented as CC, Firefly and "Zartan" overlooking a large empty hangar in RETALIATION, I kinda felt sorry for them. Where have all of your submarines and decor gone? If Chu is going to get this job again, you've gotta do better than that. To the producer's: Cobra has a town, an island, a flying heli-fortress, and several mountain temples. To put them in a hangar makes me think you don't want to make these films and are squandering your time up at bat. You have EXCELLENT source material. So much so that all your production designer has to do is look at freaking comics/cartoons. Lucas didn't have much of a budget for Star Wars in '77 and his sets are still amazing and convincing. Contempt for the audience, I tell ya! I didn't mind that RETALIATION was smaller in scope/budget. As a middle chapter, I can get with the idea that this was a dark period in the aftermath of ROC. However, the 3rd film should set out to be the definitive G.I.JOE FILM. Please give us a large cast of both good guys and bad guys, this is the essence of G.I.JOE. After RETALIATION, I find myself not confident that they will make a good trilogy of this. |
