So, I had a chance to attend Big Wow Comic Fest in San Jose this past weekend and got to meet Michael Golden (among many others). First off, he's an awesome guy and was really nice. He's still selling 11x17 inch prints of the front and back cover to GI Joe Yearbook #1. I finally got the Cobra print I had been missing for so long.
Anyway, I found out that anyone interested in purchasing those awesome prints can go through the website: EvaInkArtistGroup.com or drop an email to: [email protected] Also, as Mr. Golden was signing the Oktober Guard pin-up on the back of my GI Joe Yearbook#2, he mentioned that he is currently working on also making *that* an 11x17 print! He said that he should be done sometime later this year/early next year! I promised that I'd mention he will be at Treasure Island Comics in Fremont, CA on May 22nd - this Wednesday! If you're in the area, please come out and see Mr. Michael Golden. |

Really wish Michael Golden had been put on more Joe assignments back then... that Oktober Guard story from GI Joe: Yearbook #2 was awesome, and his covers were always my favorites.

Seeing his work in the Yearbook when I was a little kid I wasn't impressed, I thought it was too cartoony. But as I kept reading and looking at the amazing details, AMAZING DETAILS, I became a fan.

Do yourself a favor and pick up the IDW folio of of his interior art for the OG story in Yearbook #2. It's 11" x 17" art board, double sided with and without lettering. As close as most of us will ever come to owning original Golden published art...amazing work.

Michal Golden was one of my favourite artists when I was younger but his style has not aged well at all, (in my eyes). Some of his stuff from the last few years has been downright awful, (particularly his cover for A.E. #36). Kind of a stark contrast to issue #23's cover which might be the best G.I. Joe cover of all time.

Based on that OG picture, how tall is Dragonsky? He towers over Horrorshow.

IDW teased that they were going to recolor Yearbook 2 and Michael was going to draw some new pages for it as well. That was 3-4 years ago at least. Still no word.
The yearbook 2 story was my favorite Joe comic OF ALL TIME! I own 4 copies of it (5 if you count the portfolio).

Even as a kid I was blown away by the uniqueness of Michael Golden's art...I had never really seen anyone combine a blatantly cartoony style with the level of detail he achieved, while retaining a level of realism as well. His sense of scale and the dynamic angles he was able to render objects and characters from was impressive as well. That one full-page shot in the yearbook of the Cobra transport helicopter surrounded by Trouble Bubbles was freaking awesome.
Anyone know if he drew any other Joe issues, and what else he worked on?
