Here's the answer:
There is nothing wrong with what you deem "scalping". There are tons of things I would have not been able to own if not for "scalpers". "Scalpers" don't drive high prices, limited quantities and high demand do, coupled with the extreme waits and expensive costs of aquiring items first hand. I just find it strange that the same thing is being done at these conventions and shows, etailers do it .. yet the average Joe who uses the same time, resources is frowned on for doing it. Makes for a great debate/convo that for sure.

These prices are not crazy at all.
Lets break down what it cost to go to the JoeCon. My hotel bill with parking fees was just around $1400.00 My gas bill for driving was around $300.00 Just for the right to by the at Convention Exclusives you needed to purchase a Club membership plus the ConSet package. I will just say the very low average cost per person is around $400.00. I spent over $1100.00 at pre-reg. Just those 3 things alone add up too $2100.00, Do you all still think there is a huge profit being made here or are you saving money by buying them on ebay and sitting at home? I will take the Pepsi challenge and say I could sit at home and put together every single figure and vehicle +the extras I wanted to buy from the 2013 Con selection for under the cost of JUST MY HOTEL BILL. Hey, to each their own. |

I always picture scalpers as grown men stealing all the toys off the racks at a toysrus isle from kids. (ie skylanders and in my day cabbage patch dolls)
Now if someone gets an exclusive from a con it's his or her right to sell it at whatever they want to. Take sdcc for example. What’s the difference in paying a marked up price because you couldn’t make the con or using an entire workday (or two) to refresh the hasbro toy site all day. (which there is like 10 min window to get what you want in your cart and checked out in time.) Again, this makes no sense at all. *Just a note, Im glad this is staying civil ... I dont want to see this subject closed down.

So if they hunt and find it in a store, they dont have this right ... but if they go on a trip, attend a convention, they have the right to sell what they want?

I see scalpers as people who prevent children from getting the toys the want. I see the con and adult collectors as opportunist that drive us mad. If you get right down to core definition of it then I agree with you mostly. I enjoy civil debates thanks for keeping it classy San Diego |

So by this logic if I travel from Manitoba to Minneapolis, 8 hrs, gas, hotels, all that ... a vacation is justification for buying toys and jacking the price up on ebay the next day?
You guys go to the cons because you are fans, collectors, and for those with families a vacation. Vacation is not a valid reason for scalping. What is the difference between doing that and driving to TRU to find toys to sell? This has costs, gas, time, wear and tear on the car. Where is the line drawn and why? I just find it strange that one is looked at as scalping, a bad thing. Yet the SAME exact practice is not only accepted but celebrated just because someone went on a trip. Do you buy something to sell on every family vacation you go on? I think we have all had our fill of the scalper debate over the years on the forum. I could sit here all day and night and fight it out, but I have 10,000 other things I need to get done for the collecting community here on the tank. Lets all agree to have our own opinion and move along. Use this thread for pointing out good Con eBay deals and help people who could not get to the Con, find the best deals.

How can it be scalping if your not making a profit? Did I not spell that out clear enough?
