I saw the movie yesterday night. Guys, I am not a ranter or a negative person, please believe me, I am a huge Gi Joe fan just like all of you and am really happy to be in a forum with people that share my passion! I buy ''almost'' (sorry, I ain't buying the gazillion versions of duke they came out with, lol) all the waves that have been coming out since 25th anniversary and still have my 80's collection as well. I love the original comics (and especially the few ''Special Missions'' issue where Cobra is nonexistent, which gives an ever greater focus on the Joes and the brutal realism of counter-terrorism). I just could not resist writing my impressions so here goes:
- Ok, so basically, if you put all the previews together, you pretty much have seen the movie already (or at least the best parts). - The editing sucks: there's a feel of a lack of transition between the scenes. I think many have you have explained the reason behind it (cutting the screen time to fit an extra showing in a day, ...). But I honestly don't see why you would do that if you feel your movie is good (ex: Dark Knight or LOTR 1st trilogy)... unless you know it isn't and you need to maximize your revenues in the first few weekends. (ugh, money over quality. Bravo...). - Do we need so many gadgets to make a Gi Joe movie work? Really? Since when does Gi Joe rely on futuristic, unrealistic gadgets? (heck, the new Bond movies have completely eradicated them and are more successful than the older ones...Gi Joe is not about the gadgets, it's about the characters and their heroic fight for freedom... right?) - The fighting scenes are done way too close up sometimes. I saw Olympus has fallen the day before. Wow, now that's an action movie! John Chu, take some notes! - The story is not deep nor are the characters. I was expecting something to get me hooked into the different team members. Most of them have no personality. It's very superficial. The interaction between the Joes is rare and doesn't help much in getting to know them better in general. I make ''a bit'' of an exception here for Lady Jaye (her conversation with Flint in the middle of the movie... but that was just a few minutes). They did focus a lot at first on the friendship of Roadblock and Duke... but then, we know what happened to Duke, so I guess that was supposed to make us feel mad/sad that he and most of the team died at the beginning. But no, I felt nothing or almost nothing. I didn't feel much anger from the team in the events that followed. Roadblock vows to kill whoever was behind the attack (e.g. Zartan...right?) but that was it... no emotion... I know I know, they're not Oscar winning actors, but c'mon, I can pick a random movie with more believable actors: Willow, Dawn of the Dead (yeaaah, you heard me), Black Hawk Down, Fast and Furious (pick any one), The Goonies (yeah, I told this was random). I did enjoy Firefly, but they killed him off. The only character who had some kind of personality of his own and they kill him. Bravo! - Speaking of Fast and Furious: I can't believe that this movie franchise is able to better portray its characters than Retaliation has. I'm amazed by this... here again, not Oscar winning performances, but man do I actually care to what happens to them! - I'm sorry, but Snake-eyes head seems too big. It feels like he's wearing a small motorcycle helmet. They should have used a different material such as fabric not a hardened shell. Way too much body armor as well. Basically, what I mean is that I would've been more into his character if he wore more realistic and functional clothing. In fact, it almost feels like he's out of place compared to his buddies who are wearing something more ''real'' and ''functional''. In ROC, he fit in since they were wearing accelerator suits and that kind of nonsense. - Jinx is just for show, she barely speaks in the movie and that's too bad. I preferred how they portrayed her in the animated movie of the 80's. - The blind master... a very very sad part of the movie. What were they thinking? No really? You know, if they had put in Splinter from the first TMNT movie in his place, he would have done a better job! Bad acting and no explanation as to who the heck the Blind Master was (I know who he is, lol, but I mean for someone who isn't a big Joe fan and hadn't read the 80's comics => isn't that the target market that Paramount was going for? A general audience? right?). - The Zartan/Hard master plot: ok, so Zartan doesn't age apparently and the reason given for having him kill the Hard master is really, reaaallly poor. Badly conveyed storyline! - Let's be honest, if it wasn't for the Rock, the movie wouldn't have much appeal either. - And you can tell right away that the ''real'' reason the execs postponed this movie is because it wasn't that good and needed a facelift (I can't even imagine how bad it was the first time around). - Cobra Commander: yeay, the helmet is just fine. The voice, sure I can live with it... but what the hell! For how long was he really in the movie? I didn't even feel like this was his master plan. It just didn't feel like Cobra guys. No Cobra speeches no monologue which might give him more personality. Nada. But, he had a cool helmet... - Hasbro/Paramount: your decisions are for a quick money grab. You could've gone for a reboot of the series but were probably relying on the fact that you actually made a profit from the first movie so didn't want to lose too many people by going that route. You could've taken a more serious approach with the movie. With real characters I would care about, fighting realistic fights with reality inspired weapons/vehicles (a flying bullet? Really? Oddly enough, it was already done in the 80's movie ''Runaway '' with Tom Selleck) (ok, the vehicles were actually ok in this movie). Your execs don't know how to position Gi Joe in the market. Can you please have a clear vision and ensure you have the right people to execute this vision? Shame on you for restricting the liberties one could've taken with this 2nd Joe movie! - In conclusion: Gi Joe the animated movie is a much better movie than Retaliation! Yeah, that's right, I said it! C'mon guys, admit it, this movie is just not good, dare I say bad? Saying that it is better than ROC is not saying much. The fact that some of us say that this movie is good is because there's nothing else out there for Joe fans. Now, one's judgement about a movie is tricky of course. It all depends on one's reference point. You see, my reference point or my level of expectation is: a good quality movie that has an engaging storyline and good action. Yes, GI Joe deserves quality! We've been given table scraps and are so starved for something that doesn't completely suck that we'll take it. (remember the Star Wars prequels and how we kind of accepted it - even if we hated it - just because... well... there was no alternative... that was the direction Lucas was going => Disney, don't screw this opportunity!! Ok... sorry, I digress...) Will this keep the toyline alive and infuse it with more energy, I hope so... I reaaalllly hope so! You know, sometimes I almost wish the false rumor about Disney acquiring Hasbro were true. The way they are treating their Marvel movies and the announcements about the future Star Wars trilogies and side movies makes me feel the Joe franchise would be in a better capable and visionary hands if Mickey took over... (can you imagine a main Gi Joe movie series + a Special Missions type spinoff set of movies, etc...??? Whoah! that would be awesome!) Ok, my Snake Eyes super armored and hardened-yet very light-so-I-can-do-crazy-ninja-moves helmet is on, you may commence the nasty replies |

Retaliation is not a perfect movie, but it's the best G. I. Joe movie we got so far. Looking forward for a great third. |
