Love the actor and storm shadow, but you think if they contracted people for 3 movies and the first 2 didn't earn a good amount that they would terminate the contract and pay them some kind of sorry we made a bad movie it wasn't your fault amount.

For franchise movies the main actors are usually signed to multi film contracts. However the contract is voided if the studio decides not to make the additional movies. And often there is some clause for the actor to re-negotiate if the studio green lights the sequels. For example if ROC had done well, the actors could have asked for a new bite at the apple. But since it was a break even / small profit film, that probably didn't happen. But Tobey McGuire was able to re-negotiate after Spiderman took off. These type of contracts are more of the promise ring variety, not an engagement ring.
