Hey, all, new to the forum, hope this is the right place for this thread.
I'm Fred Van Lente, the writer taking over IDW's main GI JOE title in February '13. Your user "ndb" asked me to come by here and field any questions you might have about the new series. If there's anything you'd like to know and I can answer it without being too spoiler-y, go ahead and ask here. Very excited to be joining the GI JOE team and looking forward to telling new stories with a few Joes we don't always focus on, plus one or two new ones -- and plenty of Cobra players as well.

Hey Fred (i still say you are a crimson guard)
Perhaps you could address the drastic change up in uniforms that some are saying reverts back to the DDP style that Kurth was involved in before. Does this have a direct correlation with the public appearance of the Joes?

Wow, thanks for doing this! My question regards the costumes that many are up in arms about. Why costumes? They seem very impractical for the Joe team.

Welcome to the Tank.
Is this a continuation of IDW's continuity, or are you starting fresh? If fresh, will this be an all new take on GI Joe or will there be influences from any specific incarnations of the brand?

To clear up the public/covert dichotomy -- Chuck's SPECIAL MISSIONS book/team (lead by Scarlett) is basically the Navy SEALS to our rest-of-the-Navy. They're the Black Ops squad, ours is the public team. So yes, the PR flaks in the Pentagon are trying to "brand" the individual Joes with distinctive uniforms, something the Joes themselves aren't too thrilled with themselves. A lot of the tension and drama in the first few arcs comes from the Joes wrestling with this new role they've been stuck with -- while battling Cobra and other threats to the US at the same time. But we're still going to see a lot of classic looks come back -- one in particular that is a favorite of mine, that you don't see on this cover...

QUICK KICK (v1), YOJOE.COM | YoJoe.com: Dedicated to the G.I.Joe of the 80's, 90's and beyond! I'd agree a couple of them are less practical than others. And let's just say those Joes may agree with us that in many cases battlefield practicality has been sacrificed for "branding." I do like a mix of the updated/iconic looks, it's part of the fun of the franchise.

My pleasure. I'm an unknown quantity to this community, so I'm making the rounds, doing podcasts, interviews, etc.
The fans have been a huge support for me so far and one actually clued me in to a character I didn't know anything about, a fan-favorite who's going to play a huge role in my plans moving forward.

This is a continuation of developments in Chuck's GI JOE book in which Cobra outted the formerly covert GI Joe to the world. Our team becomes the public face of the Joes, allowing his SPECIAL MISSIONS squad to continue operating under the radar ... with serious consequences for both.
