On the other hand, someone yesterday suggested that China is the leading economy in the world. Not true. As long as we are the primary consumer in the world of its goods, Chinese economy is dependent on us. You don't have a strong economy if its existence is only to supply us with goods. People said the same thing about Japan 25 years ago, then we had a recession and their economy didn't hold up. China WANTS to become a consumer nation, but their wages on average (particularly outside of large cities) just doesn't allow for it. Right now, they are consumers of raw materials and oil in order to produce stuff for the rest of the world. Realistically, Vietnam could fill the same role - some say that they are being primed to do just that. The USA's economy, on the other hand, is relatively independent. We, for the most part, don't consume much of our own oil in a strategic move to let other nations use up theirs first. We are blessed with tons of raw materials and a large population that is growing. We are also a very educated population - although that is likely to trend less in the future due to rising costs. So it is quite feasible and even possible that in the near future Hasbro would turn to a US factory to produce toys. One of the biggest reasons that more companies have not is that they thought oil prices would go back down - but they haven't. With more states become less union friendly, wages will likely trend lower and manufacturing may very well increase. This is not new news. But some folks just don't get that China depends on us far more than we depend on them. We will just use them as long as it cheap to do so.

CG101 was vastly exaggerating, of course, but that doesn't change that labor costs would be going up well over 1000 percent. (Even if Americans are accepting lower wages, they're still gonna get minimum wage at the very least, and probably more).
It's gonna be a LONG time before America is honestly going to be an attractive competitor to China for manufacturing. To say nothing of the NIMBYs saying "Hell no" to someone setting up a factory near where their children live, play, and go to school, as well as the additional costs of benefits, safety, and environmental regulations that China simply doesn't observe.... We'd be paying Club prices for retail figures before you can say "Cost increase." |

yes it was exaggeration :0 why i picked those numbers lol...but its the true mentality of most middle americans..they want the american dream..and thus all the baggage that goes along with that...wife...kids...car...all of that tales money and minimum wage is not going to get it done in a way they want to enjoy...and CHina does not need the US...all they need is US minerals, oil and land...thats all they care about...just hope China stays isolationists...they decide to go empire on our assess...it wont be a prety sight....can you imagine a billion man or more army floating across the pacific? LOL California would be speaking Mandarin in a few days...they are becoming a super power that will rival the soviet union and the US....and were feeding that growth with everything we do every day....
A land invasion and occupation of the United States is an impossibility for any nation on Earth. We (the most technologically superior and among the best-trained militaries in the world) can't even effectively control one country that's roughly the size of Texas. China would be throwing their "billion man army" into a partisan meat-grinder. Heck, during the Cold War it was determined by the Soviet military that it would take 23 divisions to hold New York City alone. They'd be better off just nuking us, of course that means they'd get nuked too, and lose their moneymaker... Last edited by Jmacq1; 06-28-2012 at 06:30 PM.. |

Heh. A "billion man army" floating across the Pacific would never get here. Our Navy still VASTLY outclasses theirs, and as soon as they touched down in California they'd be facing a "335 million man (and woman, and child) army."

China is not a consumer nation. They want to be, but they are not yet. They are around 20 years from being that - but if US companies up and move production to Vietnam or Indonesia or back home, then their economy goes up in smoke. It speaks of how amazingly strong our economy is that so little manufacturing exists in our country and yet we remain the largest economy. And don't just assume about companies not moving back to the USA. It is happening already - albeit very slowly. It is smart politically as well as cheaper for many companies as China wants a higher waged work force. The most appealing part of China for manufacturing is costs. It used to be Mexico. Hasbro will always go where it is cheap and easy to manufacture.
