Contracts and what not. If Store A is going to sell the toys first and sell them to all those wanting them, then Store B wont be interested in buying them at the same price if they can't sell them. If everyone is going to sell them at the same time then more stores are interested and will buy more product. Remember Hasbro isn't really interested in selling to us, they want to sell to the retailers, who want to sell to us.
And to be fair, this IS THE first we've seen of some of this stuff in package (though, not sure if they got the international releases or if we'll be rolling tri-lingual this year)

Also remember that movie tie in stuff usually feature stuff related to the film, and the studios are downright paranoid about someone or something "spoiling" their movie.

Kids, the obvious target audience, don't care what store gets the toys first. The only thing kids are concerned with is whether or not THEIR toy aisle has them and whether or not their parents will/ can buy them... I imagine retailers have to feel close to the same way at the end of the day regardless of what Store A ordered (if Store B even knows or cares). Now if we're talking about exclusives, of course then dates matter, but as a general release action figure line, street dates remain, to me, pointless because Store A and Store B have to be getting their orders from hasbro at around the same time anyway, don't they? Also, to Maximus' point, I think spoiler prevention has more to do with what wave a character's released in more so than the 'month in advance steetdate' for the toyline's wave 1. Now, I would be willing to believe that the 'street date approach' has been implemented to curb net sales while smaller markets, like my backwoods town, get them stocked and ready for release the day scheduled. But, even that, as nice as that would be, seems too logical to be believable. Especially considering that the rest of the country got the helix wave 4 months before I did. Hmm... Is anyone willing to bet that brick and mortar retailers are the REAL reason online preorders aren't yet available?

Though I agree with both your guys' points, retailers holding product back still makes no sense to me...

If Hasbro says you do not put up pre-orders before this date, they dont (or run the risk of loosing their license and or product offerings (including potential of heavy fines as well from hasbro). Its not rocket science, think about, if your under a contract, your are legally bound tot hat contract. No conspiracies here....

They are toys, retail does not care about toys. They want movie merchandise when a movie comes out whatever that merchandise is to make quick money. Hasbro sets the street date to make sure orders are placed by retailers in a uniform manner as possible, as Hasbro does not want 4000000 orders rushing in at once and having to make specialized orders for straglers or late commers or stores to sell through to early on products they were supposed to hold till the specific date. Hasbro only offers the waves at a specific time for each wave, and thus sets a street date for the innitial product to be out on the shelf so all orders placed will get to those retailers logisitcally on Hasbro's terms. Retail also does not always follow that street date and hardly does and can be fined by Hasbro for breaking it if they deem needed (hardly ever happens). You have some retailers putting them out way too early, others straggle behind due to warehouse distribution stocking issues etc. Then you have the storeroom pilagers, the ones who take this product out early when they are not supposed too (either employee or not). Once Hasbro delivers this product to its retail constituents, its up to retail to follow the rules, its all in their park.
BBTS and other etailers are bound by thier distirubtion contracts with Hasbro. Yes, i understand how contracts work. Imagine that. What doesnt add up is that retaliation, which will enjoy full retail support as roc did, has no available options for online preorders when literally every other joe line in the modern era has. And further in advance to boot. So my question, after considering the severe lack of retail support since roc, is why would hasbro go out of its way to actively change its online preorder "contracts" unless it was an attempt to appeal to the national brick and mortar chains. BBTS and other etailers dont distribute for hasbro. They sell hasbro product to consumers. Theres a difference there thats worth googling. More over, in reference to your order fulfillment count of 4000000, hasbro kind of does want orders like that all at once. Thats how they make money... In fact im fairly confident thats why things like toyfair/ hasbros own private shows exist. In either case, and completely ignoring the fact that late orders have nothing to do with release dates, you should probably also know that you cant be bound by a contracts terms if the balls in your own court. Finally, toys are products that sell most of the time. Stores need products that sell most of the time so they make money. Money is the stuff that grown ups trade back and forth for important things like food, water, and shelter. Periodically, money is spent on not so important things. Like toys. And even stranger, sometimes, money that should be spent on toys cant be spent on toys because hasbro has a streetdate. For no good reason. Thats clearly not rocket science.
