I might point out that Topside has no thumb on the original card art either... despite constant whining.
Is the art perfect? No some could be improved, Iron Claw comes to mind instantly, but the amount of complaining about the art is far out of proportion to the actual deficiencies. considering the only defense of the art has been "it isn't meant to be museum quality," there clearly is no defense for how bad it is. that is the equivalent of defending poorly cooked food by saying at least it doesn't taste like horse shit. what it isn't meant to be isn't a defense for what it is. but the Club, in fact, stated exactly what I argued in one of the other threads. it is meant to be retro and nostalgic, which is just another way of saying it is supposed to look like the classic art. but it doesn't look like the classic art. just because it imitates the style doesn't mean it imitates the art itself. It usually takes me a total of 2-3 hours to make one of my pieces, so repainting existing pieces isn't a lengthy process at all. to get it to a higher quality for mass production would maybe only double that time frame. To me, most of them look quite similar (Barrel Roll and Iron Claw aside). |

Most of the new art cards are fine except Cover Girl, but hey...the artist got the crappy art card to begin with. Garbage in... garbage out.

it doesn't have to be precise, but it has to be comparable. eliminating that aspect of the original would have been the equivalent of simply illustrating them like cel animation but putting them in the same pose and saying it was meant to look retro, and then saying it does because they are posed the same and in front of an explosion. no, because you eliminate one aspect of the art that defined it. hell, that very example would be the DYT art, which is as similar to the vintage art as these are, they just are differing in different areas. |

If i'm not mistaken, the one showed up here is the Argentinian, and the Brazilian uses the exact same picture but redrawn (as much as i hate to admit it, the Brazilian one is a bit better) The TNT card is complete on YOJOE...there's no excuse here. Quote:

So, a guy that isn't a "digital artist" (i assume?) and does this for fun, in a very small time frame, can do a very good work...then why then can't? Again, it would be really easy to find good artists here. I can do a full new picture doing the same frankencards, and fixing everything and redrawing on top, one a day. If really needed i could do a lot more PER DAY. I bet a lot of other artist can do it too here (ZOE, Wry come to mind)

For me it's all about how these things are being augmented or updated. The ones where the artist had to do very little to the original work are at least passable.
The big Offender: COVER GIRL. Poor tracing of photo reference, Flat expressionless face, Flat rendering on the head, the gun holding arm is flat and poorly drawn disregarding proper anatomy/construction, she has an elongated torso. All of these things have ZERO to do with homaging the original retro artwork and have everything to do with the artist NOT understanding how to draw at a very basic fundamental level. Yes, these are issues that, crop up on some of the 25th artwork, but this is a COLLECTORS premium figure subscription service! Why bother creating MOC figures if you don't care enough about the product to make the presentation top notch and worthy of a premium collector fan oriented line?? I LOVE the idea of MOC subscription toys and I plan I buying these, so this is WHY I am taking such an impassioned stand on this issue! I left a post on the club Facebook page and it was deleted. I left another and I was then, insulted and insulted by the club moderators just because I had a criticism of the UNPROFESSIONAL job they were doing with this card art. I'm a PAID member, a PAYING customer and I don't appreciate that kind of treatment. This was the clubs response on FACEBOOK: "We are trying to save money.." Are you kidding me!!?? Why even bother if you don't give a crap about your customers or the product you are producing?? |

That artwork is from Sparta, which is technically an official GI Joe character.

Thanks, i've tried to explain exactly this this before, but yours is better. I saw some of your frankencards. Most are fine, some are actually really cool, and a few are not good (sorry, not trying to be offensive). if the complaints are out of proportion with the flaws of the work, it is that there aren't enough complaints.

Again, I seem to be in the minority, but I think the club subscription card art is pretty good. I don't understand all the b!tching and belly-aching. If you don't like them, then don't buy them. It's very simple. I, for one, have had fun checking out all the recent updates on Hisstank.com.
So I will say Bravo, JoeClub. Keep up the good work. p.s. Can we get a Billy or the Quinn figure as our 13th?? |
