Looks great ! Nice that it is pretty close to the OG card art. Even the nipples aren't airbrushed out.

Really let down by this. Artists have improved over the years, this looks like a MAJOR step backwards. Yes the figure doesn't have much going on, but the least they could have done was put some effort into it, even going so far as to come up with a brand-new pose.

Rights issues? Compensation for the original artist? The difficulty in leasing things over 20 years old where a lot of rights are lost, traded/sold off or have reverted back to the original creator.
There's a lot of considerations that goes into art and how contracts for it are originally negotiated. It's not always as cut and dry as a company buying something and having full use of it in perpetuity. Especially for something that was only going to be used for 1 year at the most. Most likely the original artist was a Hasbro employee so there's not much of an issue. It gets really muddy though when artwork is outsourced or contracted to a 3rd party. |

People complain when the card art doesn't look like it did in the 80's.

I think they should have just tossed them in a baggy like they used to and then might have been cheaper to subscribe. I could give two sh*ts about the card art as long as I get the figure. (The card art looks good enough to me).

...It's strange... The Convention sets get all-new and, IMHO, pretty slick art & file-cards, and they come from the Club... Does anyone else wonder why the Club and/or Hasbro didn't contract THOSE folks to do the art for the subscription cards??

Also, the only thing that "complain" and "critique" have in common is the letter "c." |

Well, that's kind of a different case I think. The con sets usually have 1 piece of art used on the box, and then sometimes individual filecard art, but that is small, and often just like what we are seeing here, either recolored art, or in some cases not altered at all, or in other cases very poorly drawn. Either way, when you print something in filecard size it always looks passable. They also know they are pretty much guaranteed a sellout on those though, and half the set is always made of troop builders, and they don't have to pay to have them carded so a lot of cost is saved on the con set that makes that art possible I think.

The real restrictions come from 'work for hire' contracts. Those contracts are common in the entertainment industry working with movies and video games. Any artist can reproduce their work that they created - contract work or not, for self promotion only, which is common to negotiate in work for hire contracts.
