I doubt Wal Mart, Target, TRU, or any grocery Store tells Hasbro to make more Snake Eyes......Thats just dumb.....no way in hell do the Big Wigs know who Snake Eyes is.......Hasbro is responsible for every figure we get and that includes all the SE, SS, Destros, CC and every repaint........
Stores dont know jack about who is who........if Department Employees dont know anything...then I doubt the ones making Millions Do...They give us repaints and kitbashes because they can and know some of you will buy it all no matter what. I say some of you because I dont buy every single figure they try and throw down our throat.......all they say is give us more product......stores arent the reason your getting a Matt Tracker......a Glenda Scarlett......"Oh Yes Hasbro....put a mask figure in with the Joes" "This the CEO of Target Commands"..........whatever...... There was never a Viper like the one that comes with the Fang....but they made and put a new name on it like Super Duper Viper Commander Officer (JK). Show them where it hurts in their wallets.....stop buying repaints. If thats your thing then keep doing it....your only going to make them keep making Crap. Who should have come with the Fang......A Cobra Trooper. Then again he would have only been puke color if he had...... All in all if you can sit here and say stores control what figures we get then by all means "Pass the Dutchie" to the left because your baked!!! Hasbro wants to hear what you want as long as they already have a mold for it. It's the old Henry Ford theory: "They can buy any color T-Bird that they want as long as its black".

But no doubt the retailers have influence, but it more in case packs. Remember the days of 24 figure cases? Not anymore. Stores want smaller cases, with rapid refreshing of cases over shorter times. No more do we see year long toy lines, assortments of 20-30 figures sold through a years time. This was all the work of the retailers.

It just doesn't add up to me. Why would Hasbro say they're listening, if it doesn't matter what we have to say anyways?
Our input is considered all the time, but again the corporate buyer mentality is far different than the mentality of each of us on this board, so a balance is always sought. Lets take for example, Ripcord, or Night Creeper. To some of us those are some bad ass characters, hell the latter is a troop builer and a ninja at that(disregard the horrible ninja force version, what in the hell?...). If Hasbro suggests Ripcord, the retailers might be like, "oh yea? Well who else is in the wave?". If Hasbro responds with "oh..well...Billy, Dr. Venom, Ripcord's girlfriend, Kwinn", that assortment will probably be turned down. Now, of course, that wave would be music to our ears. Heads would explode. Astonishment that those characters are single packed, one need not buy a comic pack to get any of them. Now to a retailer that wave could seem like a monumental shelfwarmer, and very well could be realistically. That doesn't bode well for a line that while catered to collectors, is still tied down to practices of mass market retail and demands of retailers. If that wave bombs, well the line could eventually die off. No one wants that. The retailer might then say "okay, fans want Ripcord? Good, but we need some characters that can carry that wave...save those other guys you mentioned later. Get a troop builder in there, lets get a thematic approach. Get Dr. Venom in there, but also get a cobra trooper that was shown in the comics that supported him, maybe with red sigils. Alright we need someone popular that ties into one of the main villains, oh yea Snake Eyes. We need a popular villain that has something to do...wait Zartan! Repaint him though. Oh yea another troop builder, well we got a ninja..and this wave is Cobra-esque..NIGHT CREEPER!". In that way we get a compromise, we get a popular character that most of us wouldn't buy, but the average consumer will recognize and might buy(potential sales). We get 2 troop builders. We get an obscure villain that is tied to the popular character in the wave(Ripcord is awesome and so is Dr. Venom, but to say that Snake Eyes is less popular? Less liked maybe, but not less popular certainly), another obscure hero(Ripcord) whom fans want, and to top it off, an enemy of said hero(Zartan) that also has recognizability going for him. Its all about balance, again our feedback is important, but ultimately what we want has to be met with compromise. |

if that was the case then you wouldnt have Wraith.....Matt Tracker....Cobra Bazooka Trooper..........And i ran this by the Manager of WalMart and Target tonight at the Softball game and they laughed saying that was in no way true.........
You can claim all you want that Hasbro tells retailers what to sell but this is not the 1980's, retailers are the buyers, Hasbro is the maker. If retail does not think something will sell, they will not pick it up. Same reason there was never a female 8" Sigma 6 figure. Probably the same reason we got black costume Storm Shadow instead of black Ninja Ku. Quote:

When a character of high recognizability is in a wave of obscure characters/lesser known characters, its purpose is to carry that wave, as in garner more attention to it. In our eyes this is not needed, but a retailer wants to cater to everyone. Yes I am aware that this line is mainly catered towards us, but be aware that if a retailer thinks they can make more money, they will try what they can.
The corporate buyers have a good idea of which characters are anchors, but more importantly, so does Hasbro. While retailers want certain characters, I believe Hasbro has realized just how important anchors are to ALL their toylines, especially lines like GI Joe where there isn't a major movie or cartoon series pushing (at least not right now...). More often than not, when a kid first wants to start buying into a toyline, the anchor characters are the ones they want first. So it IS in Hasbro's interests to ensure that new buyers can find SOME VERSION of major characters in some form at retail. I know locally, nearly ALL of the core characters people are complaining about are among the first to go, and with replenishment so spotty, I haven't seen a "traditional" Storm Shadow in months. I've seen the Ninja Ku, but most know Storm Shadow by his white outfit. Until the wave 7 and 8 refresh cases hit, my area was devoid of any Snake Eyes figures aside from the DVD pack. In so far as this assortment? Storm Shadow is a waste as far as I'm concerned. Anchor or not, this is just a boring figure, especially with the upcoming reship of the v1 and v2 singles and the upcoming resolute rendition. With all the characters and molds at their disposal, I really think they could have done something nifty with the 89 SE figure as far as a repaint, or maybe cycle in a Destro or even a Gung Ho (who's been rather absent from the line, all things considered). Heck, I even think the comic pack Cobra Commander could be repainted into something nifty and put in here. Dreadnok Ripper: I'm concerned seeing him here. Buzzer and the original Dreadnok comic packs weren't exactly hot sellers, and my concern is that he and Torch will bog down pegs like Serpentor and Buzzer did last year. Although, I like the brighter cartoon coloring and it looks like Hasbro swapped in the Crimson Twin arms, which look a bit better. I'll wait for better images before deciding on him. Cobra Trooper: I'm pretty good on troopers between the DVD sets and stuff like Flint in Disguise. It doesn't look bad, but basically I don't really troop build, and I don't see a pressing reason to get another of the same figure I'll likely have 4-5 of by the time this sees release. Tripwire I appreciate, though not so soon after the comic pack. I'll wait for better images, but from what I can see, his colors look a bit more vibrant, like the cartoon, along with the flat armor. Given I'm being a whore over the Mass Device, I'll probably just get him, skip the comic pack Cobra Diver is another questionable repaint in my view. He looks nothing like the Divers in the miniseries, he's a straight repaint of a character that is getting readily available, and is another Cobra in a Cobra heavy wave. Given the part swapping I'm seeing, I don't see it as unreasonable to maybe swap in the head of another Joe (like Duke) and push out the figure as an aquatic version. If nothing else I think it would be a bit more interesting. Python CG: A LOT of fans fail to remember that GI Joe ran for over a decade back in the day. Some fans (like myself) were either too young or not even born when the "original" figures came out. For us, being raised on the syndication reruns of the cartoon, we couldn't just go out to the store and get a Cobra Trooper, or a Footloose, or a Duke. But the repaint assortments gave us a chance to own at least a proper version of the characters we wanted. Hell, the Tiger Force Duke was my first GI Joe. And the CG was a figure I really wanted and I was QUITE happy with my python version. I'm glad to see that some of us younger fans are getting at least a little lip service from this line.

I was just wondering... is Storm Shadow supposed to carry wave 12? Is that why there is almost always a Ninja in every wave? Because people like Ninjas? I like Ninjas... I don't have a Storm Shadow yet... I want a wave 12 Storm Shadow...

Well honestly I'm glad to have a option of a single carded tripwire.
Since I heard he was in the 2 pack with cobra commander I assumed that would be the only way to get him. I might just get the wave 5 comic pack if I don't find armored commander. I really like joes that fulfill a standard millitary purpose but excell at it. fatigue clothing is also really cool when your lineing up a team. |
