Speaking of Ray Park, I've met him personally and I have to say he was one of the nicest down to earth actors I have ever encountered.

I think for the movie, his injury should occur as part of the story. you have to assume that the majority of the audience isn't hip on Joe lore, so starting him off as an injured mute and expecting audiences to really understand the character is too much to ask. the audience will have to be part of SE's journey for the character to be most effective IMO.
