Dear God do I hate Joe fandom these days.
At what point did the series with, y'know, the endless robot troopers and the guy who can magically camoflague himself (and is WEAK TO THE SUN) decide they were "realistic?" Duke's parachuting down with a frigging chaingun in his hands. That's awesome and if you disagree, then shut the hell up. |

I'm open minded. I'm really looking forward to the new film and animation with great optimism and welcome the diversity in the new toy waves with open wallet. I have reservations about how IDW have handled licenced properties in the past but will try the comic anyway because I've heard some positive rumblings - I am also fully aware that interior art can differ quite radically from the covers. That's why all I am judging is this one cover. Occasionally, not continually, I'll see something I don't like. This cover qualifies and so I've said so. It's my first significant negative reaction since joining this forum and I don't think that's unreasonable.

If people don't like the cover that's fine. But do they hate the art? I mean its kind of silly to say they hate the cover because duke is on it with a predator type weapon. But then again, most people hate duke period lol! IDW can't really do worse than DD. I for one think a reboot is necessary. The series was getting stale. The allure of GI Joe is all the different characters. Hama, knows this, and as long as many different characters are used well in the stories IDW should do fine.
Just make sure SE doesn't come back from the dead and fight for Cobra. |

I told you so.... ;) The Joe we grew up with and loved is dead, at least in comic form. I fear the future will be a mix-mash of what Joe used to be, what Joe has evolved into, but that is life.

I actually loved most of the Devil's due run except at the start of America's Elite... I have mixed feelings about this reboot but I'm going to read it for about a year anyway and see where it goes. I'm just not sure what Larry can do different this time out that will make it interesting and at the same time not piss me off. Well as long as Storm Shadow is still muchly the same.
I, as a kid, really got tired of Hama sometimes and thought he spent too much time on certain characters and some that didn't even exist as figures. But, after reading/watching his interviews, as an adult, I can appreciate his passion for the characters and the stories he tells. I think the plot is in good hands, the best for this comic. The artwork... too early to say, but the cover is definitely over the top, not necessarily in a good way. |

incidentally, i don't actually think the art is bad, just very ill-fit for Joe. and the Chain Gun is cheesy as hell.
i could nitpick his posture (it looks like he's standing on something instead of hanging from his parachute straps) but it's a reasonably well executed piece. and the graphic design of the cover is typically bad for IDW. that aspect of their stuff drives me nuts.

I'm only judging this one piece of art, not the whole run under the IDW banner!
