They only last for a certain number of years (can't remember how many.) and then you probably have to renew them. By the time the rights were up, there really wasn't a GI Joe brand so to speak, so other entities snagged the names.

To be fair, the US Armed Forces are currently developing something similar to "power suits". While they won't allow soldiers to run 50 MPH, they will enhance their physical attributes in other ways (like in being able to carry more weight in their packs, heavier weaponry, etc.)

So its not a completely ridiculous concept.

But watching Joes chase each other on foot at 50 MPH through city streets sounds very dumb.
