This is only tangently related news but Shout Factory has announced a sale on all their DiC titles (including COPS which of course as a tenuous link to GI Joe and featured character bios written at least in part by Larry Hama). Also their license for DiC series expires at the end of this year, it's clear that Shout will not be releasing the DiC GI Joe series, but perhaps the next company to take the reigns in terms of DVD (and possibly Blu-Ray?) releases will be inclined to do so?
Shout! Factory Store Announcement and sale here.

Chickens counted before hatched, I suppose. They announced the DiC series was "soon to be released" at the 'Joe Con and now there's definitely no way of knowing whether it ever will be. You would have to know who is going to buy the DiC rights next and know whether or not they're even remotely interested in producing the 'Joe series.

A bit of a missed opportunity, at least for Operation Dragonfire (which could've sold decently). I am a bit surprised that Hasbro is apparently going to let Shout dump their properties. Hasn't Hasbro been trying to get control of all the rights to their properties media (at least in the U.S.)? And given the problems they encountered for Transformers: RiD and Animated (being under the thumbs of Disney and Cartoon Network), they are probably right to do so.

The ONLY thing I wanted that was from DIC was the 2nd Joe Series. Oh well, maybe the next company with the license will put it out first

+-MWG-+ Hasbro is partnered with Shout for their DVD releases but they don't own Shout Factory. It could be that Cookie Jar (the company which now owns DiC's catalogue) decided not to offer a renewal to Shout because they plan to put more of the DiC catalogue on their own streaming website: Jaroo... Always Something on. or release DVDs of some of these DiC shows themselves. Who knows the exact details, but I wouldn't mind high quality streams of GI Joe through Jaroo.

It is possible DiC would refuse to sell the property licenses individually, but I could see Hasbro making a big effort to get control over those tied to their own properties. Jaroo would have to work with Hasbro to use anything tied to Hasbro's IPs, and Hasbro is still in bed with Shout for a long time IMO (at least until Shout gets done releasing any Transformers shows it can). +-MWG-+ |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Hasbro outright buy the rights to the TF and Joe comics from Marvel? It would make sense that they did the same for the cartoon rights from Sunbow, and IDW & Shout would be licensing completely from Hasbro.

Hasbro is making a great push to get control of all the shows based on their properties... I don't know if Cookie Jar would need any special permission to release the DiC GI Joe it would probably depend on what the conditions in DiC's original contract were. I'm just saying Hasbro couldn't force Shout to keep hold of the DiC Licences, and Cookie Jar may have not given them a chance too... but this is all speculation.

MASK DVD news: Press Release for M.A.S.K. - The Complete Series | TVShowsOnDVD.com Yeah I don't know about that, either there's a seperate licensing contract for that show, or Shout thinks they can make enough money off however many units they can produce before the end of the year to make a release like that worthwile.
