I took the plunge and bought the Rapid Strike Commando from BBTS and he came today. Here's the verdict:
1. Uniform - typical Hasbro quality (good) but horribly ugly pattern. Some one mentioned the army and marines are now trademarking their camo patterns, but that doesn't seem to have affected the dozen plus high end companies from using it. While these companies are admittedly selling a higher cost product, none of them have the capital Hasbro does. That being said, Hasbro must of fired the person who used to create their unique camo patterns, because some of their past stuff was pretty cool. Grade - D 2. Figure body - HORRIBLE coloring for the skin tone. I am not kidding when I tell you its the closest thing to the skin color you'll see on dead people at their funeral. And we discussed Hasbro going cheap by not using a super articulated body but they actually topped that and didn't even use a muscle arm body. They used the standard skinny arm body, which is only second worst to the sculpted armor vest body. Grade - F 3. Head sculpt - They used one of their typical, very common head sculpts. It is the head sculpt that followed their "pin head" sculpt and was used extensively on their earlier WWII offerings in the late 90's. The paint job was poor at best as there were many spots missing paint especially in the hair. Here's where I have one of my biggest grips with Hasbro. From 2002-2005 Hasbro produced some of their best human head sculpts in the Joe vs Cobra, Spy troops, and Valor vs Venom lines. Big Brawler, Chief Torpedo, Blackout, Dusty, Depth Charge, Duke, Ripper and Tunnel Rat are great sculpts Hasbro could be using with different hair colors, flocking and flocked facial hair to add great variety to their line with no development costs. Even that aside, it’s WAY overdue to give the general GI Joe head sculpts a modern update. Grade - D 4. Equipment - I bought this particular Joe because he had more gear then the rest it seemed, so overall I was satisfied with the amount of gear (minus the missing body armor.) The rifle he comes with has been issued by Hasbro a number of times, but it's their best sculpt to date. Too bad the quality was piss poor and the sliding stock just slides right off the back without being held together. The throat mic was nice as is the slide on arm/knee pads. The molded boots are Hasbro better version as well. The pistol holster is still very oversized and a poor sculpt. Grade - B Overall Grade - D Clearly with the success of companies like Hot Toys, Sideshow, Soldier Story, DID, and ACI in the 12 inch market THERE IS A MARKET FOR 12 INCH ACTION FIGURES. Just the name GI Joe brings with it a brand that is priceless. As a person who has bought many of the products from the companies mentioned above, I have come full circle and now want affordable, durable, retail ready figures that are easy to equip/customize but figures that still look cool and realistic. Hasbro is sitting on its hands watching a huge market gap go unfulfilled as I believe they could easily answer this call. As recommendations: 1. Create new head sculpts that look like a continuation from your Classic Collection and JVC/VVV days. These head sculpts had the perfect combo of iconicism and toy. (i.e. - hire that sculptor again!! Fire the person who did the last batch of 12 inchers and the ROC heads.) 2. All figures should come with the super articulated body, no questions asked. That is the market standard now so try to keep up. If you want to get bold remold the arms and legs to be a bit more muscular. 3. Resize your oversized accessories. You have many good accessories; some just are way too big. 4. I like the articulated Joes hands just fine but would love it if Hasbro used different colored plastic for the hands. Give me black hands for night ops, white hands for arctic and green hands for jungle. As someone already mentioned in the thread, you articulated spring loaded hands are masterpieces! At the end of the day, I'm betting that many 12 inch action figure collectors want a $40 priced action figure that comes complete and isn't a model kit to assemble. Personally, I love kitbasking 12 inch GI Joes because the accessories are easy to slide on and off and customizing is easy and fun. I also don't have to have "surgeon tools" to put them together or risk breaking delicate pieces. So if Hasbro made their product like this but put some effort into making it more realistic (resize molded parts that are too big) and they'd have a winner. I will always say, to date, the GI Joe Club's 12 inch Crimson Guard is a shining example of what Hasbro could do with the 12 inch line. The club charged $60 on a limited run, so I have no doubt that at retail something like this would go for no more than $40. Here are some customs I made for about $50 buying parts/body off of Ebay separately. All the parts/body are Hasbro or 21st Century, and every 21St century part has a Hasbro equivalent: Get to work Hasbro!! Last edited by Chris L; 07-11-2011 at 09:19 PM.. |

Sorry about bring this back, but I am interested in these figures. It seems these costumes are the most (and only) modern ACU uniforms aviable to 12" Joes, no?
Anyway, I want to know the rank and division of the gunner and the paratrooper. It seems that both them have a patch on the left arm but I couldnt find ANY picture showing it, not even on ebay. Thanks! Last edited by Rique; 10-13-2014 at 11:11 PM.. |
