LARRY HAMA G.I. JOE Q&A
The scribe for the new IDW relaunch of America's realest heroes dishes on the new series By Matt Powell Posted 7/3/2008 Comicdom’s soldier-of-fortune Larry Hama has been enlisted to helm the cult war comic G.I. Joe fresh on the slate from IDW. With countless hours of Joe scripts under his belt, Hama’s way beyond basic training to ground the Joes in their new re-launch. A #0 issue of the series will bow this October with an ongoing to begin next January. With series art by Robert Atkins, you can expect the Joes to look good while skinning Cobra hide. Recently Wizard caught up with the veteran scribe to get the lowdown on his new tour of duty with the Joe team. (I tried to follow the link to the article at Wizard, but it appears to have been pulled or something. I couldn't find it over there. So instead, I'm just going to link to the copied article over at JoeSightings.) Last edited by WildWeasel; 07-03-2008 at 10:47 PM.. |

I'm not thrilled with the choice to go with a total reboot, but I figured that's what IDW would do from how they handled Transformers. Not sure how Hama would do a total reboot "his way" but since he's writing I will be buying this to find out! Robert Atkins' art is pretty solid from what I can remember of his Devil's Due work. Some of Hama's comments in the interview seemed a little off. Why would he do a Joe team with Heavy Duty over Roadblock? He also says he wouldn't do Cobra-La, but I've seen pics of the Nemesis Enforcer/Falcon comic pack that has the "exclusive comic by Larry Hama" sticker on it. Guess I'll just have to wait and see. |

Heavy Duty eh? Well at least Hamma is back, so I'll give it a shot.

Hopefully since Hama is on this, a total reboot won't be so bad. I think the whole Heavy Duty over Roadblock might be a Hasbro choice. With the movie next year, and fans looking for merchandise to coincide with it. So if HD is in the movie, people might come to expect him in the comic.

They will be available at your local comic shop. IDW also sells individual issues in their online store.

I was pretty skeptical about IDW doing a G.I.Joe reboot. But if Larry Hama is doing it, then I'm all for it and couldn't be happier. I've been with him since the very beginning of the Marvel run, and I'm not about to leave him now. IMO, he his to G.I.Joe, what Peter Cullen is to TransFormers.

because he's not stuck in the 80's or married to the characters strictly as they were in the past, like many fans are and have projected him to be. take for example this comment that will drive the movie-naysayers crazy:
Quote:
Have the screenwriter’s adapted any of your past Joe stories for the film?
HAMA: Like I said before, plots and events don't register high in my world-view, but the writer has really nailed the characters, and that's what counts. I love that comment, it just refutes every bit of whining about what G.I. Joe is that we've endured since the movie details were released. perhaps this needs to be in the "this movie sucks" thread as well. |

I'm personally happy for the reboot. I know there are those who have been following the stories and aren't happy about it. But, for those of us who are just starting to get back into it, I think it will be pretty cool. Can't wait for October!

Robert Atkins SUCKS !!! Thanks IDW for really going ALL OUT on this one. Why don't you have a couple of bastard kids tag along with the joes for good measure. You all totally f--ked Transformers thanks for coming up with this abortion of a creative team-up. Might as well dig up Jack Kirby's corpse. I'm sure it'd do a better job than this 5th string hack that's signed on. God and I thought the early Devils Due runs were beyond visual mediocrity. You've got dudes like Ashley Wood and Ben Templesmith in your stable and your braintrust comes up with this gem....
