I find 3D a bit annoying and all but unseen after the first half hour. But here's the thing. 3D has revitalized the movie industry. All 3D movies, even really bad ones are huge hits overseas. The real reason why studios have sunk so much into 3D movies is because it sells big.
Now I don't like it and would have gone to see the movie in traditional 2D regardless, but this announcement is going to really hinder the movie world wide. Folks expect an action movie to be in 3D these days and since this one won't be, it may be passed on by. While I don't care about it too much. It was the overseas sales that pushed RoC over the top enough to green light a sequel. I think deciding not to run this new film in the hip, happening format is the studio's way of saying they don't expect much from this and have no interest in putting much into it. Too bad. It's also not entirely true to say for certain that 3D is what's bringing up the international box office takes, either. In a lot of cases, international distribution is only now reaching a point where a lot of countries and places that didn't get movies before are getting them now (whether 3D or not) so the big international returns could be simply a factor of more international theaters getting the movies at all as opposed to "foreigners sure do love that 3D." It's impossible to say either way at this point, though, due to the timing. What is definitely true, though, is that most movie studios are handling international distribution more effectively these days, and thus are seeing a greater share of the international profit than they were even five years ago (when often studios would sell overseas distribution rights for a pittance, not expecting much of a return on international showings). So international box-office take is rapidly becoming more and more important to studios (which is also why you'll hear them touting it when their films are doing well). |

I'm sure I'm not the first one to say this, but the 3-D fad comes and goes. Nothing new here.

It's VERY relative to say that 3D has revitalized the movie industry. By most accounts, total ticket sales (in terms of numbers sold) are actually continuing to trend downward (at least in the US), but the extra money the studios make on the "3D bump" coupled with rising ticket sales gives the illusion that things are holding steady and/or that attendance is "up" when in reality it's only the profit margins that are holding steady or "up."
It's also not entirely true to say for certain that 3D is what's bringing up the international box office takes, either. In a lot of cases, international distribution is only now reaching a point where a lot of countries and places that didn't get movies before are getting them now (whether 3D or not) so the big international returns could be simply a factor of more international theaters getting the movies at all as opposed to "foreigners sure do love that 3D." And as for revitalizing the industry. You're probably right that it's more catch phrase and fuzzy accounting to make it true. However we may feel though, the movie industry believes it. They think that it will bring back all the money they lose now that everyone has blue ray/dvd and a home theater system. True or no, that's the current trend.

True, but it's getting a MUCH bigger push this time. Even the TV manufacturers are in on it.

I just thought about it, does this mean the studio has no faith in it?

There's a chance the move may get moved up to a June 29th release date, which would actually be a sign of faith in the movie (since it'd be moving into the slot that was previously occupied by Star Trek 2, which is expected to be a big hit, but looks like it might get delayed). If they delayed the movie to a late August or September release date, -then- it'd be a sign of no faith in the movie. |

Does anyone know if Nancy Bishop is going to do the casting for part 2 also?
