From what I read almost everyone here hates ROC the movie, i don't hate it, though disappointed for sure. At least a Joe movie was finally made.
The audio commentary added a lot to the movie for me, learned why it wasn't as good as hoped and mainly how much Sommers was disappointed with everything also. To those who have not played the movie with audio commentary I suggest giving it a try. I admit I find all audio commentaries to be interesting, so biased upfront. At least you don't need to see most of the bad acting, I disagree on certain characters you all have mentioned and agree with some you did, Duke and Ripcord for sure. To be fair with all those actors you need a lot of money for the good ones. |

Wow I did not get that at all from the commentary! I guess people interpret things differently. I for one loved the movie and wouldn't change anything in it. It was the best most entertaining movie of 2009

I don't think almost everyone hates it. There have been polls and most people are just "Eh, not bad, not great", but it's the internet, and anyone who isn't a lurker is either epic fail/win with no in-between.
As for the commentary, yeah, it was pretty informative. |

Just seems most of the posts lately have been about how bad the movie was. I enjoyed it, plus it helped me get even more into joes. I missed out on a lot of the 25th stuff, had to ebay a lot, not many fun hunts. Sadly all my joes were tossed when I moved from PA to CA at 11 years old, even my FLAGG! I was in a situation where I couldn't grab all the 25ths so ROC really helped out my hunting crave. Thankfully TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Ross helped with getting some of the 25ths I missed out on.
I just really liked the audio commentary and would suggest it for Joe fans and movie buffs, I listen to all audio commentaries since Laser Disc days. I really blame the writers strike more then anything when it came to ROC, and casting like I said before. I think Sommers did what he could do with what he had. To be honest this is a very difficult movie to make, die hards like us and the regular movie folks. If they made "our" movie it would be like the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, would have been sweet except who else would see it? IMO a very hard movie to make, unlike batman, superman, etc. This is a huge cast so we will be lucky to get any good name actors. |

Second, I don't think any Joe movie could ever be compared to LOTR simply due to the epic nature of the original material. GI Joe was a comic book and cartoon - LOTR is a series of classic novels. LOTR influenced gaming, music (you know, Led Zepplin among others), art, literature, costuming, and lastly movies (you know, Narnia). ARAH influenced comics, cartoons, and toys. It didn't really extend too far from there. There are familiar terms from the show and the name is synonymous with military action figures. But my point is that LOTR is in a different class - more like Original Trilogy of Star Wars. Its not a fan made movie, either. It was corrupted by studios and producers and writer/director's vision and interpretation of the novels.

However, most fans outside GI Joe forums, moviegoers who don't give a fuck about GI Joe but just went to watch ROC anyways...AKA most moviegoers who just wanted to see a movie on the weekend or whatever, did not like the movie and most critics did not like it. One of my friends wanted to walk out because he thought Storm Shadow was dead. One of my older friends, his kids liked it, but he himself did not, said it wasn't GI Joe. This is fine, no one has to like the movie and many fans have made valid criticisms of the movie. The big movie that year was Star Trek, that was something that got several rave reviews and in general, did well with most moviegoers. |

[QUOTE=ChaplainAsst;2347016]That quote threw me off in two respects. First, fans of the Tolkien books -not all but many - hate the movies. Nice visuals and cinematography, but hate how little of the actual words of the characters are spoken in the movie. The worst was the scene at Mt. Doom. Read that scene in Return of the King and then watch the movie - very different in terms of tension and what is happening but visually the same. QUOTE]
??? are you frigin kidding? i wouldn't say many of the fans, maybe just a few hate the movies. I look at that like this you can get 2 different experiences by reading the books and watching the movies. They changed things here and there to better suit the movie experience and to take out the boring stuff from the books. things that stand out are no Tom bombidle (that was a waste of time in the book) and they gave some of the lines to Tree Beard anyway. and the way Saraman died. but it all works well in the movie. this goes for LOTR and GI JOE only the NUT BAR FANS that think the book or comics and cartoon are the greatest thing in the world and can't accept any change in their characters tend to really hate the movies based on them. and now because of that we get the director of justin beaver and step up 3D to do the next movie, THANKS!!!! |
