The U.S. Navy is pressing forward with some brand-spanking new uniforms.

The US Navy has had this in the works for a few years now. I was under the impression that the new uniforms were going to be digital woodland camo not the traditional camo seen in the pic.
I thought it was odd that they choose a blue pattern for the standard Joe uniforms in ROC. Of course, it was even stranger that the BDU's had "GI Joe" printed all over them.

There seem to be a lot of different options for these uniforms: hats, collars, camo patterns, pockets, etc. Do you know the reason for all the differences? Is it rank?

Nah, the new Navy digs are a lot darker, and frankly a lot more functional than the ROC uni's.
To answer your question, my impression is that they are a bit more tailored for all the different MOS requirements the Navy has. |

Navy Working Uniform Pictures I used them on a RPG site for my wererat. They're not bad looking, but yeah I've had that exact same pic on my last three computers. It's not new. You may notice if you blow them up it points out 'options' on a number of things. Meaning they were testing them out to see which the sailors liked best.

Just to add... the Navy's NWU isn't primarily meant for camouflage purposes. The pattern is more cosmetic than anything else, to keep the Navy's working uniform in line with the digital camo trends. According to one of the NAVADMINs:
Quote:
The concept uniforms are not intended to be ‘camouflage’ uniforms as is the case with similarly patterned uniforms of the other services. We have no need for camouflage. However, by learning from our past working uniforms as well as the uniforms from other services, the Navy realized that a solid cover uniform shows heavy wear areas much more predominantly than a multicolored pattern.
The solid color uniforms also show wrinkles in the fabric more predominantly and often a small stain or spot of paint renders a solid colored uniform not wearable. A multicolored uniform alleviates those problems as well. |

As far as I know, the Navy still uses US Woodland (a.k.a. M81 Woodland) camouflage BDUs for the SEALs' and Naval EODs' primary tactical wear. |

Nah. The ACU pattern was tested by the Natick Army Warfighting Labs and it won the "Universal Camouflage Pattern" competition (beating Crye Multicam overall, even though Multicam performed better in woodland environments). The problem with the ACU is that it's decent at disguising the wearer's silhouette across most environments (temperate woodland, semi-arid brush, semi-built up areas) but it's not particularly good at any one environment, hence all the complaints from soldiers in Afghanistan (where it sort of stands out against arid, mountainous terrain in rural and undeveloped areas). Natick is now developing a "Coyote" variant of the ACU, which is better suited for more arid environments.
It sort of defeats the whole purpose of having a "Universal Camouflage Pattern" though, if they're going to have to make environment-specific variants, anyway . From what I've heard, though, the 75th Ranger Regiment has been given budgetary considerations for purchasing Crye Multicam patterned uniforms (cut in the ACU style). |
