zuludelta. I got a crazy challenge for you. Though digital designs did appear decades earlier, its said the more modern digital-camo made a come back because of you folks in Canada, with "CADPAT" in 1988.
In 1986 just 2 years earlier we saw the computerized G.I. Joe card art. This computerized look came complete with the card art's backdrop showing a more pixelized background framing each and every character, seen here with our favorite Computer specialist; Mainframe. I wonder if anyone in Canada's CAPAT of 1988 saw these 1986, 1987, 1988 Joes with the digital computer pixel background? I wonder if Joe's 1986 computerized digital framing had any inspiration with CADPAT's computer digital camouflaging a mere 2 years later? Do you know anyone who knows anyone with CADPAT? Here are some Joe toys of Canada in 1986 showing their packages indeed had the "new" computerized look in the backdrop with those digital pixels.

Nah. The ACU pattern was tested by the Natick Army Warfighting Labs and it won the "Universal Camouflage Pattern" competition (beating Crye Multicam overall, even though Multicam performed better in woodland environments). The problem with the ACU is that it's decent at disguising the wearer's silhouette across most environments (temperate woodland, semi-arid brush, semi-built up areas) but it's not particularly good at any one environment, hence all the complaints from soldiers in Afghanistan (where it sort of stands out against arid, mountainous terrain in rural and undeveloped areas). Natick is now developing a "Coyote" variant of the ACU, which is better suited for more arid environments.
It sort of defeats the whole purpose of having a "Universal Camouflage Pattern" though, if they're going to have to make environment-specific variants, anyway . From what I've heard, though, the 75th Ranger Regiment has been given budgetary considerations for purchasing Crye Multicam patterned uniforms (cut in the ACU style).

From what I was reading eailer today 173 airborne had been allowed to deploy in Multicam instead of ACU.

The problem with ACU/UCP pattern, I think, is the way it's been labeled as a "universal camouflage," both by Army PR people and the media. It's clearly not that in practice, as shown by all the reports coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan. What it is, I think, is more of a "utility camouflage"... it's a pattern that will do in a pinch in the majority of environments the Army deploys in, thus minimizing the need for environment-specific uniforms for non-tactical use. But just because it's the best "do-everything" camo doesn't mean it's the best camo in any one particular environment, particularly for tactical use.
The question really becomes, was there a call for a "univeral camo pattern" in the first place? I'm wondering how many Army units actually go from one distinct terrain to another in such a short span of time that a "universal camo pattern" that is merely decent across different environments trumps, in terms of practicality, an environment-specific camo pattern suited only for that particular terrain. |

I happen to like CADPAT better than the US Army or Marines versions.
CADPAT has more dark green for northern forest (Naturaly) And I live in the UP Of MI, bordering the great lake and then Canada. My digital cammo items are all CADPAT, from clothes to my equipment/laptop bag.. And it's frigging expensive.

I really dislike the look of ACU, MARPAT and Multicam are far better for the battlefield.
