Funding , all about the funding. Mindbender was funded by destro and so if rex wanted to continue to work out the namo-mite technology he needed the funding of m.a.r.s.

In the comic adaptation Rex explains Mindbender was hired by the US government to create the nanomites but it was deemed too unethical.

A few clarifications.
The nano-mites were in the testphase not fully complete yet. The Doctor even tells Duke that Mindbender survived along with himself, so he isn't dead. The Doctor might have made the nano-mites complete/ready to use thus being the "genious behind the nano-mites". He obviously started working with Mindbender on the project and took over (maybe because Mindbender was to badly hurt in the bomb run?). I doubt Destro would complain if someone decided to take up the mantle and keep the project going - not only that but finishing it. The motivation is there for The Doctor because he got bombed by his "friends" to change sides, and also possibly he needed to do it to stay alive. |

I dunno... I sure wouldn't hire someone to work on my technology that tried to steal it and almost got killed in the process. LOL
He also held McCullen responsible for his condition, which is why he prepared "something special" just for him. He had that nanomite/destro mask all ready to go and was just waiting for an opportunity to use it on him and take over. |

Rex Lewis went to www.Marshasjobs.com and applied for his position there.
As for the nanomites (nanoprobes) are concerned, I believe it will be revealed in the next movie about how the Borg from TV's Star Trek the Next Generation had infiltrated Mars and that is how Mars came into contract with them. Since this RoC and Star Trek are both Paramount films, there would be little copyright infringing. I have to say, honestly, I really hate the nanomite thing because it was in Star Trek 10 something years before RoC and it is just an old idea. It was used in the first Image G.I.Joe run and it was oK then but to put it into a movie is just blatant plagiarism creatively speaking. When it comes to G.I.Joe, they could have done so much better. There really was no excuse.

As much I love the RoC movie. There are so many plot holes, that it isn't even funny. Now rather than turn this thread into a debate of the storyline. I want to know how Rex Lewis went from being a science officer to injured to running the Cobra organization. Either we'll get our answers in the deleted scenes of the dvd or in the next film.
We all know Rex was injured in the silo explosion. So who fixed him up? Did he fix up himself or what? Did Mindbender fix him up? Furthermore, how did they end up working for M.A.R.S. enterprises? That's like watching Star Wars and wondering how Han met Chewie. |

He was an Imperial Officer and Chewie was a Wookie slave. Han stopped another officer from beating him. Look it up. Yeah, I'm a nerd. |

McCullen thinks Rex/The Doctor IS Mindbender, it just wasn't presented clearly enough in the film for most people to catch on.
Rex tells Duke that he and Mindbender escaped with his research. Obviously Mindbender had something to do with Rex's healing. Then Rex went back to McCullen posing as The Doctor, who McCullen refers to as "The genius behind our Nanomite technology". From the Flashback that follows though we know that Mindbender was behind the Nanomite technology. There ya have it - McCullen thinks The Doctor is Mindbender. He doesn't realize things are amiss until he comes in and sees the Doctor all bald and having issues with Duke. LOL! Quote:

He had that nanomite/destro mask all ready to go and was just waiting for an opportunity to use it on him and take over. I love the idea of the doctor and his master plan for using MARS and starting Cobra. The thing that bothered me, though, is why in the world would Mindbender just volunteer to share his entire knowledge of nanomites with Rex? Because of some scientific brotherhood? It was an emotional moment and he was feeling sentimental? Just 'cause he's crazy like that? Silliness. And Rex already identified the nanomite technology on his own, so, plot-wise, it wasn't like he needed MB to clue him in. A more natural response from Mindbender would have been him wondering what the hell this nerdy soldier was doing in his lab. Whoever said that it was stated in the movie that MB is still alive is right, I think. It would have been better if Rex pulled a Don Draper and stood in for a deceased Mindbender in the post-explosion rubble, but it makes sense to keep the MB character going. Now that Rex is CC, he ceases to be the chief scientist on the team, so MB can reassume his role. Where the hell he's been in the meantime I'm sure will end up being something entirely far-fetched instead of any cool, reasoned explanation. He was hiding under CC's new skeleton helmet; he was a hologram all along, but his hologram machine was unplugged by a careless Neo-Viper; he assumed the identity of a nanomite. And on. And on. |
