I think that's the problem, right? No it doesn't, but everybody thinks it does. Despite the "modernization," Transformers is still, basically, itself - even with the Bay films. I've little doubt, GI Joe would have the same "success" if they did the same, instead of trying to compete with things it is not.

Just to piggyback on this
the 12" line/AT/SUper Joe ran from 64-77 RAH 82-94 HoF 91-94 Savage 95 Extreme 96 Starts and Stripes TRU line 97-98 RAHC 00-02 JvC/SpyTroops/VvV/DTC 02-06 Sigma 6 05-07 25th/Resolute 07-09 RoC/Resolute/PoC/30th 09-11 Retaliation/Renegades 12-13 50th 14-18 Classified 20-Present In the 60 years, there have only been 78-81 (5 years,) 99 (1 year) and 19, a total of 6 years we have not had GIJoe in some form or another on the shelves. As far '99, there was the "The Adventures of G.I. Joe: 2010" line. Listings on ebay and craiglist list 1999 as the release year. As fas as 2019, I'd be surprised if there wasn't some licensed merch. I think that is a tough question for fans, let alone writers and movie producers who can easily take their military action-adventure concepts and make them without needing to license the G.I. Joe brand and characters. What does G.I. Joe bring to the table that would make a Hollywood guy buy into it instead of just making new IP? |

What is G.I. Joe then? How would you pitch it to a movie producer or even the general public who has to decide where they will spend their entertainment dollars? What makes it distinct? Other than "military action-adventure" what is the core of G.I. Joe?

At it's heart, it's a group of very specific, distinct, guys (and gals), "brothers-in-arms," who battle Cobra - a very specific, distinct antagonist. The magic is in the relationships they share with the backdrop being foiling the exploits of the "ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world." It's when you try to turn it into Black Hawk Down meets Fast and Furious w/Tanks, or a modernized Enter the Ninja w/sports bikes, that you start to dilute what it is at its core. If it doesn't feel familiar, and isn't instantly recognizable, it's nothing more than one of the dozens of generic "military action" flicks on Netflix. The problem is that that's exactly what Hollywood always does.
I would love to see GI JOE live action done right, I just don't think they can unless they do it on the small screen with some sort of disclaimer. Hell, the stuff in XMEN 97 is blowing me away, and how they can do some of it amazes me(no spoilers). GI JOE RESOLUTE was the closest I think we have gotten to a modern update, but in live action, on the big screen, too much real world potential anger. (The HOOD?) Nuff said.

Make it an R-rated movie for kids and be done with it. Think Terminator 2. Cast a kiddish-age character (Billy Kessler?) to put front and center in the marketing for the "this might be OK to take your kids to" wink and nudge so Dad has an excuse for why Little Timmy won't stop talking about how he wants an Uzi now, but the brand has an adult fan base and deserves a movie that reflects that.

The big test for something like that will honestly be The Last Ronin movie.
I picked up the book and sequel during the Target book sale last week, and having readit, I'm not sure how well it connect with general audiences.

Depends on the audience. If it's the audience that grew up on multi-colored bandanna'd turtles shouting "Cowabunga dude" every 30secs, no. But for those of us who grew up on the first run of Eastman & Laird comics, it felt like a return to norm, which was the intent. Now I wholly concede that the kid's version is more popular, so how well that'll play at the box office is anybody's guess and definitely presents a challenge.
