I had a bunch of figures in mind I thought were ROC but were actually POC. So after looking at them by year the only ROC figures who stand out to me are Ice Vipers and Para-Vipers.
I forgot how much damage the movie did. I still have a lot of the movie Vipers and they're not useful for anything IMO.

The Joes became a UN sponsored counter-terror unit that even poached a few OG Joes (General Flagg Jr (ROC Hawk), Shipwreck and Kamakura most notably). They're allies/friendly rivals to the Joe team. The Cobra folks became a new Cobra subfaction loyal to the "reborn" Dr. Venom (ROC Cobra Commander). |

Agreed. He was also useful to swap the Jakks Build and Brawl Slaughter head onto for those of us who wanted an ME Slaughter but didn't want to donate a kidney to get the SDCC exclusive.

True to a certain extent, but since 1964 there's only been a handful of years where a new GI Joe product, in one form or another, hasn't been available for purchase. From my recollection, that would be 1979-1981, in between the demise of Super Joe and the debut if ARAH. Even after ARAH was cancelled in '94, there were a myriad of 12" lines being released. Also, there were still licensed products available after the figure subscription service ended in 2018 and the debut of Classified.
the 12" line/AT/SUper Joe ran from 64-77 RAH 82-94 HoF 91-94 Savage 95 Extreme 96 Starts and Stripes TRU line 97-98 RAHC 00-02 JvC/SpyTroops/VvV/DTC 02-06 Sigma 6 05-07 25th/Resolute 07-09 RoC/Resolute/PoC/30th 09-11 Retaliation/Renegades 12-13 50th 14-18 Classified 20-Present In the 60 years, there have only been 78-81 (5 years,) 99 (1 year) and 19, a total of 6 years we have not had GIJoe in some form or another on the shelves. |

I think it's the fan base and a couple factors:
1. Unless it's a faithful reproduction of SUNBOW or MARVEL, it's crap to most. 2. Studios seem to think they have to modify and modernize and "real world" too many things (XMEN MOVIES) and it takes away the fantasy, fun and magic. 3. For Transformers - It is a mixed bag of feelings when you go thru those forums, G1 fanatics hate it, BAYVERSE people love it and hate G1. I think because there have been so many versions of Transformers (G1, RID, BEAST WARS, Etc) that the fan base is more diverse, where GI JOE is pretty much SUNBOW or MARVEL, the rest of the stuff (SIGMA, EXTREME) were just not too popular or accepted by the Joe community. Now, these are just my opinions of what I feel is the issue. I personally have not hated any of the Joe or Transformer movies because I am okay with a new spin on the lore, hell my mind's version of my Joe's are way different from the cartoon or comic in some instances.

The biggest challenge G.I. Joe has as a franchise is that it is not a super original idea to begin with. Military action movies have been pumped out religiously since at least the 1970's. Transformers has a fairly unique niche (giant robot action) where they are the biggest budget in the room. G.I. Joe has to compete with things like Top Gun, Rambo, and a plethora of big-budget tentpole films every summer. Other than nostalgia for Gen Xers, the G.I. Joe brand doesn't have a lot of appeal outside of its existing small but dedicated fan base.
G.I. Joe is also famous for it's tag line "A Real American Hero" which makes it a bit tougher to sell internationally. Transformers movies often double their revenue overseas which is something G.I. Joe has struggled to do. The producers are also in a bind in that the more they eliminate the patriotic slant of the RAH era to appeal to international audiences, the less nostalgia it trips for domestic audiences. Personally, I think G.I. Joe would work better as a long-form show on a streamer where they could take the time to develop characters and storylines. |
