His characterization is more like Scorpion from Mortal Kombat than it is with Snake Eyes. Guy seeks to avenge the death(s) of family & loved ones, gets manipulated by someone pretending to share that quest for justice(Quan Chi/Kenta), his vengeance leads to damaging a clan that did him no wrong (Arashikage/Lin Kuei), and then seeks vengeance on the person who manipulated him in the first place. It wouldn't surprise me if Evan Spiliotopoulos, Joe Shrapnel, and Anna Waterhouse had originally written the script for a Mortal Kombat movie that told the origin story for Scorpion, but their script was canned in favor of the turd of a Mortal Kombat movie we got that same year. So when RIPD Director Robert Schwentke picked them up for Snake Eyes, they just retooled their Mortal Kombat script for GI Joe. Scorpion became Snake Eyes, Sub-Zero became Storm Shadow, Quan Chi became Kenta, Sonya became Scarlett, and Kiiara became Baroness. The Lin Kuei became the Arashikage, the Special Forces became GI Joe, and the Black Dragon became COBRA. We turned a Mortal Kombat script into a GI Joe script. How about let's not make GI Joe movies out of rejected Mortal Komabat movie ideas? |

For the most part. I think the only context where he should speak is when telling his origin story up until the point where he loses his voice, then he shouldn't speak. That's largely why I wasn't against the idea of having him speak & show his face in the movie because it was telling his origin story. It just does a poor job & doesn't even get to the most important part of his origin.

Barbie may be the most successful "action figure" line of all time and the term "Barbie" has entered the lexicon as a normal word and every girl, and therefore every woman, has heard of, and most have played with, the figures. Moms and daughters can pose with, and play with, the pink car and figure pack at the theater and no one bats an eye.
Transformers has surpassed the 80's cartoon and most people now think of blockbuster action movies which, in an age of blockbuster superhero movies, is now a mainstream entertainment option. GI Joe has yet to transcend Sunbow. If anyone knows what it is, it's 90% in reference to the 80's cartoon. Its movies have not been blockbusters and every kid doesn't play with it. If the movie had a tank and figure pack at the theater it would still be non-mainstream to play with it. GI Joe just isn't on the same level as the other two in terms of name recognition. There's no reason why what happened with Transformers couldn't have happened with GI Joe, except for the terrible handling of the movies as others in this thread have discussed well. |

Slightly off-topic: Did the 2009 film kill interest in the 25th anniversary line or was it on life support before that?

If anything I think Hasbro pumped out more toys for the movie line so it overshadowed the 25th Anniversary & Resolue lines. So the franchise/brand was on life support because of how much crap was dominated by the ROC toys.

Writing will make or break a movie. Put Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson, and Scarlett Johansson in a movie, give them the best director, but unless the scriptwriting team gives their best product, it will be a train wreck that bombs at the box office. I don’t care how much Cheap Plastic Crap gets thrown at it.
The writing on all three films was godawful. |

I enjoyed Retaliation. I have always felt that there are plenty of great storylines from the Marvel comics that could be used for a movie, or even a great trilogy.

I just came here to say, "sorry". I didn't mean to hijack this discussion into the main catchall thread. I rarely venture out from that thread nowadays. I'll have to read this thread and catch up.

It’s difficult for a movie franchise to be successful when the lead producer thinks the franchise is stupid and is ashamed to be a part of it. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is the problem. This is the man who almost single handily killed WB in the 1990s.
