The only thing that can be said with a certainty about Joe movies is that Storm Shadow is pretty consistently the best thing in them.
Well said. Far and away the best thing for me about Rise of Cobra was Lee Byung-hun as Storm Shadow. Thought he was a perfect choice and really nailed it. And while Ray Park has the moves and everything, he looks like a midget when standing next to other actors. And the less said about Cobra Commander the better. Baroness and Scarlett were nice to look at anyway!

Joseph Kosinski apparently nailed Top Gun 2. He’d be my choice.

My picks would be Christopher Maguire firstly I think the way he handle the last two Mission Impossibles would work well for GI Joe, the Syndicate is a very COBRA-Esque antagonistic force in Mission Impossible. The more I think of it he'd be perfect for adapting something like Special Missions. Secondly, I'd go with the Russo Brothers their Captain America flicks are great examples of what a GI Joe film should be. Hell, Winter Soldier is a better version of Retaliation. Some of the Russo brothers' films outside of the MCU haven't been so great, but I think GI Joe would play to their strengths, not weaknesses. Joe Russo wrote the script for Extraction which I feel is the ideal direction for a GI Joe film. This would bring me to my third pick Sam Hargrave the director of Extraction, I think he could really capture the military aspects of GI Joe extremely well. Extraction is Hargrave's directorial debut so he's not as experienced as Maguire or the Russos none less I think he could pull it off.

Joe Johnston could direct a Joe Colton origin story.

Not all directors are great writers, and not all writers are great directors.

Bring in Mike Costa and Christos Gage to write the script. Any competent director should be able to adapt it.

Oh, and no shaky cam!

Based on select Marvel ARAH comic arcs would be ideal.

And we don't need an origin story. Drop us in the middle of the action, ala issue 1, and heck, even the original Star Wars.
