Sam Mendes who directed 1917 would be good. He can produce war movies with gravitas, he is a big name. He also did Road to Perdition so he can direct a comic-to-screen adaptation. And he did a Shrek thing.
Why I thought of 1917 is not only the war aspect but also the pacing of it. The whole thing is a nonstop adventure with a consistent camera shot all the way through. It starts then it never stops. That sense of consistent action would be great for a GiJoe movie. But it also slows down for dialogue and personal moments, which this film would need. So there is a nonstop sense of momentum but also sometimes it slows and other times it speeds up. I need GiJoe to be a real war movie. It needs to be serious about sacrifice, nobility, valor and courage. But, I don't need it to be a drastic, gorey film about the horrors of war. It should have real stakes and someone shouldn't make it out alive, but it should be reasonable enough for a six to eight year old boy to watch.

Wow. From Sam Mendes to Scooby-Doo. We're really "running the gamut" here.
Perhaps possibly the OP could clarify whether these were meant to be realistic options? Or purely fantasy picks?

I can't believe I'm even saying this, but if the script is written by someone who knows and respects the lore and characterizations and if visual design stays reasonably close to the source material, I vote Michael Bay. I hated all his Transformers movies, but the root problems there were the writing and visual design. He can do glossy, glamorous, cartoony military action like no other.

The clear and unimpeachable choice to write and direct a GI JOE movie is Chris McQuarrie, the writer of the last three MISSION IMPOSSIBLE movies and the director of the last two.
A GI JOE movie should NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT (infinity) be a dark gritty war movie. The Mission Impossible series, mixed with the Bond series is the perfect template. |

GI Joe is a toy franchise ladies and gents. It's never going to have a "serious war movie." It's going to be made to entertain, not to make people think about "valor and courage and sacrifice." In fact Hasbro would probably prefer it avoid getting "too" serious altogether, because they already have problems selling the franchise to people who think they're "war toys." Quote:
Yeah, I didn't like the Transformers movies, either, but I don't mind Michael Bay as a director, so long as he's not allowed too much leeway to tinker with the script. The Rock and the Bad Boys series are pretty good/fun films, so he could definitely pull off G.I. Joe.
But seriously, a lot of people (myself included) felt like Bay was playing in the wrong franchise and that GI Joe would've better suited his sensibilities. Last edited by Jmacq1; 03-09-2022 at 09:36 AM.. |

I've often made this same point. It's not too late, Paramount. |

Heh, yeah what's old is new again, given those Entertech waterguns were a big part of why toy guns became neon-colored and/or at the very least had to have the "blaze orange" muzzle plugs and such (them and of all things, the OG Megatron toy).

Speaking of Joes getting killed off, I can't help imaging the Omaha Beach scene of Saving Private Ryan, except it's the Joes on the beach of Cobra Island.
